Job summary

Huron–Clinton Metroparks in Michigan seeks a Park Maintenance Worker/Specialist to perform skilled and unskilled labor across park facilities. You will maintain turf, plants, irrigation, and infrastructure while assisting with reports and supervising seasonal staff.

Role includes on‑call responsiveness and potential evening/weekend shifts. Under supervision, you will work on building and grounds maintenance, snow removal, and safety compliance, with opportunities for advancement to Level 06

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or 4 years related experience.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • PAL pesticide license (core + 3A/3B/6) or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • CDL-A with Air or ability to obtain within 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain turf and landscaped areas with hand or power mowers and edging tools.
  • Plant grass, flowers, trees and shrubs.
  • Irrigate turf and landscape areas using hoses or sprinklers.
  • Repair fences, gates, walls and walks with carpentry and masonry tools.
  • Operate park equipment across maintenance, landscaping, and road/beach duties.

BARGAINING UNIT / LEVEL: Non-Supervisory Bargaining Unit - Level 04/06

SALARY RANGE: $54,954 – $74,942 annually DOQ

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the District Park Maintenance Manager, Park Maintenance Supervisor and/or Golf Course Maintenance Supervisor, work activities in this position primarily involve performing unskilled and skilled labor in connection with the maintenance of buildings, structures, grounds, construction and development of parks, utilities, roads and special facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain turf and landscaped areas using hand or power lawn mowers or clippers and edging tools.
  • Plant grass, flowers, trees and shrubs.
  • Irrigate turf and landscape areas using hose or portable sprinkler system.
  • Clean drainage ditches and culverts using rakes and shovels.
  • Shovel snow from walks and driveways.
  • Repair fences, gates, walls and walks using carpentry and masonry tools.
  • Operate all park equipment in one or more phases of work such as construction, landscape maintenance, clean-up, forestry practices and road and beach maintenance.
  • Maintain records of preventative maintenance and repairs.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence; make recommendations to supervisors on maintenance issues.
  • Train and supervise provisional and seasonal maintenance employees.
  • Employees shall perform other duties as assigned.
  • NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • May serve on committees as requested such as safety, strategic planning, etc.
  • May assist park operations with special events.
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Park Maintenance Worker – Level 04
  • Associate Degree or four years of related experience for Worker Level 04.
  • Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Possession of Pesticide Applicator License (PAL) including core and categories 3A, 3B and 6 or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Possession of a Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL–A w/Air) or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – Park Maintenance Specialist – Level 06
  • Meets all of the minimum qualifications of the Park Maintenance Worker – Level 04.
  • Ten years of related experience for Specialist Level 06.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Preferred knowledge of materials, tools, practices, and methods used in building and grounds maintenance.
  • Preferred knowledge of workplace hazards, preventative safety measures, and applicable OSHA/MIOSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of laws and ordinances regulating the operation of motor vehicles.
  • Preferred knowledge of irrigation, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to operate required tools and equipment.
  • Ability to load, unload and move materials between work locations.
  • Ability to stand, stoop and bend for extended periods and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to traverse sandy, marshy or wooded areas with even or uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including the use of telephone, radio equipment, and computers.
  • Ability to supervise and direct employees effectively.
  • Must be available by phone to respond to on-call issues requiring immediate resolution.
  • May be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs, including special events, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Tools, Equipment and Hardware Requirements
  • This position utilizes a variety of hand and power tools; lawn mowers and landscaping equipment; trucks, tractors, and other light- and heavy-duty equipment. The role also requires the use of telephones, two-way radios, and standard office equipment including copiers and fax machines. A computer and related software applications are used, including financial, accounting, payroll, database, scheduling, publishing, spreadsheet, and word processing programs.
