Job summary

The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park seeks a full-time Facilities Technician to join our outstanding team. You will perform maintenance and custodial services across the historic Ford Building and support multiple departments, keeping an iconic venue safe and inviting for visitors.

You will bring intermediate skills in electrical and controls, operate basic shop tools, and participate in safety training.

Qualifications

  • Intermediate skills in Electrical or Controls with ability to troubleshoot and fix technical equipment.
  • Experience with hand and power tools; knowledge of tool safety.
  • Ability to operate powered lift trucks; valid operator license a plus.
  • Able to climb ladders to 12 ft and work on elevated platforms.
  • Dependable with excellent attendance and references.
  • Effective communication and ability to follow written and spoken instructions.
  • Team player; adaptable to shift work.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; good driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and follow museum-specific practices near the Historical Collection and visitors.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on motion rides, air compressors, portable air conditioners and dehumidifiers.
  • Troubleshoot and fix technical equipment issues.
  • Replace light bulbs and assemble furniture.
  • Perform code-compliant maintenance, repair, and updates to building equipment/systems (electrical, HVAC).
  • Open and/or close the Museum daily; follow security protocols.
  • Operate Museum vehicles and assist with their maintenance.
  • Maintain and clean displays and equipment.
  • Perform routine custodial duties (floors, carpets, windows, restrooms).
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Facilities Director.

The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park seeks a full-time Facilities Technician to join our outstanding team. Spend your workdays around some of the most important air- and spacecraft from the dawn of human flight through today, while helping maintain the historic landmark 1935 Ford Building!

Position Summary

Facilities Technicians provide maintenance and custodial services to the Museumas assigned by the Facilities Manager. In addition to typical Facilities work, Facilities Technicians work in support of the Education, Special Events, and Curatorial departments on projects ranging from providing one of San Diego’s most iconic event venues, to changing exhibits of historically important aircraft and aviation-related objects. The technician will bring intermediate skills in one or more building trades: the ability to fix technical equipment, painting of building areas, minor electrical work, and other duties as assigned. This position will offer opportunities to learn additional skills and earn or maintain equipment operating licenses. The Museum is a safety-first workplace. This is a full-time, hourly (non-exempt), daytime position.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Learn and follow Museum-specific practices for working near and with the Historical Collection and Historic Building, and around Museum visitors.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on motion rides, air compressors, portable air conditioners and dehumidifiers, and other equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and fix technical equipment issues.
  • Miscellaneous tasks such as replacing light bulbs and assembling furniture.
  • Perform code-compliant maintenance, repair, and updates to building equipment/systems in their scope of trades expertise (electrical, HVAC, etc.).
  • Open and/or close the Museum daily, following building security protocols.
  • Operate Museum vehicles and assist with their maintenance.
  • Maintain and clean displays and equipment.
  • Perform routine custodial duties (floors, carpets, windows and restrooms).
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Facilities Director.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Lifelong learner eager to acquire new knowledge and skills.
  • Intermediate skills in one or more of the following fields: Electrical, Controls, and the ability to troubleshoot and fix technical equipment issues. Consideration given for other trade skills.
  • Ability to learn to operate powered lift trucks. Valid equipment operator’s license is a plus.
  • Experience working with hand and power tools and knowledge of tool safety.
  • Ability to climb ladders at least 12ft high and work on elevated platforms.
  • Must be dependable with excellent attendance and references.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to follow written and spoken instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • This position will be required to work and be adaptable to Shift work.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Good driving record required.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in a number of environments which may include hot, cold, noisy, dusty, close spaces or at heights. The Facilities department will supply PPE for the jobs as required. Standing and/or walking for six or more hours per day and heavy physical activity is periodically required, including the handling of objects heavier than 50 pounds. The Museum is a non-smoking, drug-free workplace. Successful completion of a drug screening and criminal background check are required prior to final offer of employment.

Compensation

$18-$24 per hour depending on skills and experience, plus benefits for full-time employment. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance; life insurance; paid holidays; vacation and sick leave; and Balboa Park museum discounts. The Museum offers many options for health benefits and pays 90% of employee premiums for medical, dental, and vision coverage.
