Job summary

The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park seeks a full-time Educator to design and teach education program curriculum across audiences, promoting learning through the engineering design process and addressing global challenges.

You will support the Education Director, create STEM workshops, camps, tours, and outreach; maintain lesson plans and supplies; and collaborate with staff to run classes, events, and partnerships.

The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park seeks an Educator to join our team. Position Summary

The full-time Educator creates and teaches education program curriculum for the Museum's various audiences. The Educator encourages learning through the engineering design process and poses global challenges that allow students to become active participants in their own education and represents the Museum to various educational organizations.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Support the Education Director in the operation of the Education Department and the implementation of the Museum’s programs, including on Mission Control, in the museum classroom, and at offsite locations.
• Create STEM-themed curriculum, including workshops, outreach programs, camps, and tours.
• In collaboration with the Education Manager, help maintain the classroom, lesson plans, and supplies for workshops, outreach programs, summer camps, and other educational programs.
• Coordinate with other Museum staff as necessary for the smooth implementation of all Education Department classes, programs, activities, and meetings.
• Advise the Education Director on local educational partnerships and conventions and coordinate the Museum’s participation in collaborative events.
• Assist with the planning and implementation of the preschool program, Storytime Engineers.
• Assist with other Museum programs, including special events, birthday parties, weekend family events, evening events, and sleepovers.

Desired Education/Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field or in education/teaching.
• Teaching experience, preferably in informal education.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Strong background in researching, developing and delivering educational programming in a team environment
• Ability to work in an informal learning environment while also providing a structured, school-classroom-type learning environment, and to switch between both as needed.
• Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities
• Strong interpersonal skills with students, Museum staff, and partners, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Strong computer skills and knowledge of standard office and classroom software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
• Self‑motivated, with strong attention to detail.
• Ability to multitask and adapt to changing teaching environments.
• Interest in, and ability to learn, current learning theories.
• Basic knowledge of, and willingness to learn, the subject matter represented by the Museum’s collection.

Working Conditions

Work may be performed in an office, museum, or field environment. The role requires slight physical activity, including handling lightweight objects up to 25 pounds and standing and/or walking for more than five (5) hours per day, with limited exposure to physical risk. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role. The Museum is a non-smoking, drug‑free workplace. A criminal background clearance is required prior to a final offer of employment; additional clearances, such as fingerprinting and TB testing, may be required to comply with San Diego Unified School District and/or grant funding requirements. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Compensation

$21-$24 per hour, plus benefits for full‑time employees.
