Job summary

The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Inc. is seeking a night shift custodian to provide cleaning services across residence halls, academic/administrative spaces, and athletic areas. You will work 11:00 p.m.

to 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime as needed for events and weather-related staffing. Responsibilities include maintaining restrooms, floors, and common areas to expected standards, assisting with event setups, snow removal, and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid PA Driver’s license required with safe driving record.
  • 2-5 years of housekeeping/event setups experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and stock restrooms, corridors, offices, classrooms, locker rooms and lounges to standard.
  • Vacuum, scrub and buff floors; maintain furniture and woodwork.
  • Operate heavy-duty cleaning equipment and ladders safely; report irregularities.
  • Maintain key security at all times and assist with event coverage.
  • Snow removal and winter weather prep; respond to emergencies when required.

Position Summary

HOURS: 11:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. Monday - Friday

DESCRIPTION:

This position will provide cleaning services that consistently meetstandards of cleanliness determined by Quality Assuranceinspections of the following campus locations: Residence Halls,Academic/Administrative Spaces, and Athletic Spaces. Thesepositions are considered part of the weather and emergency staffand may need to respond to emergency issues outside normal times.Position may be required to complete overtime work based on eventsand staffing needs.

OUTCOME:

College facilities and related equipment will be clean, orderly,safe, and prepared for College classes and campus events.

Essential Functions
65% Housekeeping
  • Cleaning, maintaining and stocking restrooms, public corridors,lobbies, offices, classrooms, locker-room facilities, and loungesto expected standards.
  • Vacuuming and extracting carpeting; scrubbing, finishing, andburnishing floors; polishing furniture and woodwork
  • Operating heavy-duty power custodial equipment and climbingladders
  • Maintaining key security at all times
  • Maintaining grounds in the immediate vicinity of the assignedarea, including sweeping sidewalks
  • Special cleaning or work projects during semester breaks.
20 % Utility Requirements
  • Lock or unlock interior and exterior doors as assigned.
  • Assist with event coverage, which may include event setup,coverage or event teardown.
  • Inspect building/work area and report any irregularities in atimely manner.
  • Remove trash/recycling from buildings as assigned.
  • Assist with setups and furniture moves as needed
  • Load and unload trucks as needed.
  • Respond to emergency clean ups or urgent tasks asrequired.
5% Maintain Housekeeping Equipment and Work Areas
  • Keep custodial closets/carts, utility rooms and boiler roomscleaned and organized and stocked properly.
  • Clean and properly store all custodial equipment, movingequipment, and tools after daily use. Minor maintenance oftools/equipment including belt replacement, emptying, cleaning andreplenishing consumables necessary to operate safely andefficiently. Including mops and utility carts.
5% Snow Removal – Main Priority
  • During inclement weather keep lobby and hallway floors as cleanand dry as possible.
  • Snow and ice removal using hand shovels, scrapers or powerequipment.
  • After snow removal spread calcium or de-icing material on stepsand sidewalks by hand.
5% Safety & Regulations
  • Assist the College in complying with local, state and federallaws such as recycling, waste disposal, safety’ Right to Know’regulations, Bloodborne Pathogens standards and chemical usage.Participate/Attend trainings provided.
  • Practice safe work habits; be aware of safety issues that mayaffect the welfare of employees, students or the public.
  • Only use college provided cleaning chemicals, supplies, andequipment properly and as directed.
  • Operate and maintain housekeeping & moving equipment in asafe and prudent manner.
Experience and Education Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid PA Driver’s license required with safe drivingrecord.
  • 2-5 years of housekeeping/event setups experiencepreferred.
Required Skills and Qualifications
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Normal building/outside conditions but occasionally exposure toextreme weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to water, dust, dirt, and cleaningchemicals.
  • Occasionally exposed to heights, confined spaces, de-icingmaterials and cleanup of bodily fluids.
  • Position requires climbing ladders, bending, stooping, walking,grasping, shoveling, sweeping, mopping, pushing, pulling, reachingand operating housekeeping equipment for extended periods oftime.
  • Maximum lifting of 50 pounds. Frequently lifting objects up to25 pounds, employee must get help if lifting over 50 pounds.Occasionally pulling and pushing up to 75 pounds.
MENTAL EFFORT REQUIRED:
  • Position requires handling multiple tasks and taking directionsfrom several sources.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Must be able to read and understand MSDS/SDS safety sheets,work orders and directions for event setups.
  • Be able to set priorities and complete tasks under timeconstraints in a safe manner.
  • Must be able to use basic math skills to calculate mixingratios for cleaning chemicals and to complete setup requirementsfor Campus events.
  • Must be able to work as a team and maintain cooperativerelationships.
  • Be able to work independently in absence of supervision tofollow College procedures and routines.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be willing to work overtime to accomplish the outcome ifneeded.
  • Must be able to interact with other shifts and/or departmentsto accomplish goals.
  • Be on-call for emergencies such as snow storms, icy and/orflooding conditions, equipment failures, etc.
  • Working closely with a diverse population of students, faculty,and staff, while respecting the privacy of all customers
  • A positive, cooperative, and respectful attitude should alwaysbe projected toward the College, faculty, students, staff, andcommunity members.
  • May need to use personal vehicle for transportation.
  • Be able to adjust work schedule when required.
  • Weekend and evening event coverage when required.
  • Participate in the on-call emergency rotation as needed.
TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND MACHINES NEED TO OPERATE:
  • Usual housekeeping equipment such as mops, buckets, brooms,ladders, vacuum sweeper, etc.
  • Machines such as floor scrubbers, burnishers, propaneburnishers, auto-scrubbers, carpet extractors, wet vacs and varioushand and battery-operated tools.
