Description
With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing, and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community.
CHLDC has an opening for one (1) College Access to Success Counselor at College STEPS, our community based college access and persistence program. The College STEPS program provides the resources and tools necessary for each student to reach his/her post-secondary education goals. This is a full-time position. The counselor will support a cohort of community members through the college application process and enrollment.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individual counseling and group workshops around college access, career exploration, and educational success for participants of CHLDC Career and Education Programs and community members.
- Implement a comprehensive outreach and recruitment strategy to promote the programming of College STEPS and form a student caseload.
- Work in partnership with the Division Director of College Success Programs to explore and implement a pilot online degree program with Kingsborough Community College.
- Plan and implement activities including parent information sessions, college visits, leadership activities and program celebrations.
- Review and monitor students’ financial aid to assure maximum aid is attained
- Communicate with key stakeholders at high schools and related agencies to support student progress toward educational success.
- Ensure the maintenance and growth of the STEPS through supporting fundraising activities and tracking STEPS student utilization and outcomes.
- Enter student file data into a data tracking system weekly. Actively engage in using data to inform practice.
- Maintain daily student attendance forms, student records and portfolios.
- Collaborate with CHLDC staff to meet needs of participants and provide crisis intervention and referrals as needed.
- Conduct individual and family outreach to program participants as needed.
- Participate in meetings and staff development sessions with CHLDC.
- Demonstrates commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- BA in Education, Counseling or related field. 1 – 2 years of experience is preferred.
- Must have a flexible schedule, some evening/weekend hours may be required.
- Demonstrated ability to engage students on a regular basis with consistent follow up.
- Strong interpersonal skills; highly organized and motivated.
- Knowledge of college admissions and the financial aid process required.
- Commitment to youth development perspective.
- Computer proficiency, specifically with Excel, Word, Publisher.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.
Compensation:
- $55,000-$57,000 dependent upon experience. We also offer a very competitive benefits package.
