County of Santa Clara Health System (CSCHS), a large public healthcare system in San Jose, CA, is seeking a full-time BE / BC pediatrician with fellowship training in child abuse pediatrics who has an interest in advocacy for vulnerable children and youth, to join the staff of the new Medical Clinic at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Santa Clara County.

About the Children’s Advocacy Center

The Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) of Santa Clara County provides medical evaluations, forensic interviews, and advocacy services to children and youth who may have experienced child sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. The CAC collaborates with SCVHHS, the Department of Family and Children’s Services (DFCS / CPS), the District Attorney’s Office, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations including Community Solutions and YWCA. CAC physicians and advanced practice providers are members of the SCMVC Department of Pediatrics.

About the Position

The Children’s Advocacy Center Pediatrician will have clinical, administrative, and systems development responsibilities. This role positions the physician as a leader in child advocacy across Santa Clara County. The ideal candidate is an experienced general pediatrician with significant child abuse pediatrics experience beyond residency, and an interest in caring for vulnerable populations including children and adolescents affected by abuse, foster care, juvenile justice involvement, homelessness, food insecurity, and commercial sexual exploitation (CSEC).

The candidate should have expertise in forensic evaluations of abused children, awareness of trauma impacts, and the ability to collaborate with organizations to enhance service integration.

  • Clinical Responsibilities:
  • Perform forensic evaluations for child sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect at the Medical Clinic at CAC and SCVMC. Hours and call schedule to be determined.
  • Provide consultation on child abuse and neglect cases to DFCS / CPS, law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, and clinical providers within SCVHHS and external clinics.
  • Collaborate with the upcoming Pediatric Diagnostic Center to participate in developmental assessments with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Supervise CAC advanced practice providers (physician assistants and nurse practitioners).
  • Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Develop educational materials and provide ongoing training on abuse recognition and mandatory reporting for staff pediatricians, residents, and emergency department personnel.
  • Support the SCVMC Child Abuse Prevention Committee in evaluating and improving abuse evaluation quality and educational efforts.
  • Work with county and community partners to develop trauma-informed resources for children who have experienced abuse, involving agencies like Behavioral Health, DFCS, KAFTA, Juvenile Court, Probation, District Attorney’s Office, and others.
  • Represent SCVMC in county-wide child health and safety advocacy organizations, including CAPC, CDRT, and CAST.
About the Organization

SCVMC hosts residency and fellowship programs, partnering with Stanford University Medical Center. It features a Level 1 Trauma Center, Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, Burn Center, Primary Stroke Center, and a CARF-accredited Rehabilitation Center, serving both the county and the larger region. Providers benefit from an integrated electronic health record (Epic), recognized by HIMSS at Stage 7 for excellence in health IT.
