Job Summary

COTA/L shall implement the plan of care as established by the OTR/L and the physician in a professional, competent manner, upholding excellence with quality of care.

Responsibilities/Requirements
  1. Screen all residents in the facility on a quarterly basis, to identify those who have experienced declines in their functional abilities and determine if Occupational Therapy intervention is indicated.
  2. Carry out treatment program according to plan of care in consultation with Registered Occupational Therapist.
  3. Identify the need for modification of treatment plan and consult with Registered Occupational Therapist.
  4. Monitor and report resident performance and progress.
  5. Assist Registered Occupational Therapist in re-assessment of patients. Assist in determining need for continued services or discontinuation of services based on patient progress.
  6. Supervise Rehab Therapy Aides.
  7. Educate staff, family and caregivers as indicated.
  8. Identify needs for program development and implement programs according to company policies and procedures.
  9. Identify equipment needs of Occupational Therapy Dept. and order equipment according to company and facility policy.
  10. Complete all required documentation according to guidelines specified in Documentation Manual.
  11. Coordinate in-services for facility staff as needed to ensure safe and effective carryover of Maintenance/Restorative Programs and overall care of the residents.
  12. Attend all facility required meetings.
  13. Promote profession within facility, including coordinating special events during National Occupational Therapy Month.
  14. Attend Continuing Education courses specific to current position.
  15. Always carry out job responsibilities in a professional manner.
Education and Licensure

Must have an associate degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.

Must meet all certification and licensure requirements as established by the state and national board associations.

Clinical Experience

Knowledge of AOTA code of ethics and role delineation, including guidelines for supervision.

Ability to supervise Occupational Therapy Aides.

Knowledge and Skills

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Possess current working knowledge of Functional Pathways policies and procedures, clinical programs with application skills to therapy disciplines.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients, their families, and interdisciplinary team members.

Empathy and patience to work with individuals who may have physical challenges or limitations.

A collaborative approach to working with other healthcare professionals and effectively communicating treatment plans and progress.

Compliance and Documentation

Competence in maintaining accurate and timely documentation of evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.

Continuing Education
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and continuing education activities to stay updated with advancements in the field.
Physical Requirements
  1. Ability to stand, sit, and move around for extended periods to evaluate and treat patients.
  2. Physical strength and dexterity to facilitate therapeutic activities, assist with transfers, and use equipment.
  3. Capacity to lift and position patients as needed during therapy sessions.
  4. Potential exposure to infectious diseases and human waste products.
  5. Prolonged periods of sitting and working on an electronic device.
