STARTING SALARY
$28.152

POSITION SUMMARY

Operates a bus over an established route adhering to a predetermined schedule in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner to allow passengers to board, travel, and alight at scheduled stops.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Drives bus and announces stops along routes.
  • Announces cross streets and intersecting transit stops.
  • Ensures that customers deposit only appropriate coins and bills into fare-box.
  • Issues and receives transfer cards (collects invalid transfer cards) and receives and returns fare-cards.
  • Contacts Control Center regarding all problems.
  • Operates lift to board and discharge disabled passengers.
  • Inspects vehicle for lost articles.
  • Prepares daily trip sheets and bus for service.
  • Removes refuse and prepares bus for pull-out.
  • Tallies various categories of boarding passengers by manually operating a recording device.
  • Enters tally numbers from recording device at beginning and end of run.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Submits to and passes drug and alcohol testing as mandated by the Federal Transportation Administration.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Has an acceptable driving record and a valid State of Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or a valid State of Illinois CDL permit with the three endorsements: KNOWLEDGE, PASSENGER, and AIR BRAKES.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Standing, changing destination and bus numbers, signs, helping people board the bus, walking to relief points, checking bus, and sitting while driving.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing brake pedal and accelerator, windows, and pulling door control latch.
  • Climbing into vehicle, adjusting mirrors, balancing, stooping to adjust driver’s seat, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Reaching, accepting, and validating transfer and fare cards, adjusting mirrors, handling transfer and fare cards, operating fare box, horn, punching transfers, listening to traffic sounds, and using radio monitor.
  • Seeing both near and far, watching stopped vehicles, checking passes/cards, and monitoring traffic signals during operation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Customer service experience or skills to provide outstanding service to passengers.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and procedures relating to surface vehicle operation.
  • Knowledge of relevant state and municipal traffic laws.
  • Ability to read and interpret bus schedules accurately.
  • Knowledge of fare structure, transfer regulations, and Bus Operator rules and procedures.
  • Arithmetic knowledge.
  • Clear and accurate speaking ability.
  • Knowledge of preparing and using applicable transportation forms.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work mostly inside the bus.
  • Work under extreme cold or extreme heat, with air conditioning, during wet or humid conditions, driving in rain/fog, and in traffic noise and vibration.
  • Handle mechanical malfunctions, vehicle breakdowns, electrical issues, burns, explosives, chemicals, heights, and other injury risks related to traffic accidents.
  • Work under atmospheric conditions such as diesel fumes, exhaust, toxic fumes, acids, battery odors, dust, mist, gases, and other hazards.
