Job summary

Upgraid is seeking a full‑stack engineer to design and build interfaces for exploring building data, energy simulations, and upgrade recommendations. You will connect diverse data sources, extend the FastAPI backend, and support scalable energy simulations across many buildings.

The role requires 3–5 years in full‑stack development with Python and a modern JS framework, plus experience designing REST APIs and working with PostgreSQL.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years in full‑stack web development using Python and a modern JS framework
• 1–2 years designing REST APIs and working with relational databases (PostgreSQL or equivalent)
• 1+ year wrangling imperfect data from multiple sources
• Proven end‑to‑end shipping in professional settings, personal projects welcome
• Ability to measure, ship, and iterate, with self‑motivation and curiosity

Responsibilities

• Design and build the customer interface for data exploration, energy simulations, and upgrade recommendations
• Normalize and integrate data from diverse sources into a unified model for the backend
• Extend FastAPI backend to serve new data products and frontend features
• Support asynchronous jobs that run energy simulations at scale
• Handle imperfect datasets and reconcile data quality issues for actionable insights
• Build UI components that help non‑technical users understand results and actions
• Collaborate with customers to align product development with their vision

Location: Boston (Somerville), hybrid - flexible 3 days a week in-office

Type: Full-time, early technical hire

Compensation: Base salary range of $100K - $130K + equity

Upgraid is an early-stage startup developing a highly specialized AI energy model to read a building's internal systems from space. From skyscrapers to data centers, malls, warehouses, and single-family homes, billions would benefit from system upgrades. What You'll Do

• Design and build the interface where customers explore building data, view energy simulations, and act on upgrade recommendations
• Connect and normalize data from diverse sources (satellite imagery, utility records, building permits, economic data) into a unified format our models can use
• Extend our FastAPI backend to serve new data products and support frontend features
• Contribute to the asynchronous job systems that run energy simulations at scale across thousands of buildings
• Buildings don't come with clean datasets. You'll figure out how to reconcile mismatched addresses, incomplete utility records, and inconsistent permit data into something usable
• Energy simulations produce a lot of numbers. You'll build interfaces that help non-technical users understand what matters and what to do next
• We work directly with our customer to improve our products, and want to ensure we are always developing new features that align with their vision
• Have a strong sense of ownership and enjoy a collaborative culture

Requirements

• 3 - 5 years of experience working as a full stack engineer developing and deploying web applications using Python and a modern JS framework such as Svelte, React, Vue, or similar
• 1-2 years of experience designing REST APIs and working with relational databases (PostgreSQL or equivalent)
• 1+ year of experience wrangling imperfect data—cleaning, transforming, or integrating datasets from multiple sources
• Experience shipping something end-to-end in a professional environment. We like knowing about personal projects or open-source work too
• You understand how to measure, ship, and iterate
• Self-motivation is required
• Intellectual curiosity about the work you do
• Ability to work in-office 3 days a week
• Ability to thrive in a low-ego environment

Preferences

• Experience developing and use a variety of ML methods
• Experience working in an early-stage startup or strong desire to work in one
• Experience building B2B enterprise software
