Position Summary
The Supervisor, Fuel Handling is responsible for the planning, organization, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of the Fuel Handling Department. This role oversees a team that:
- Safely receives and unloads rail cars of coal
- Supplies boilers with a continuous stream of coal via a complex conveyor system
- Maintains bottom ash ponds, fly ash silos, and ash landfill sites
All operations must comply with regulatory and environmental standards.
Responsibilities
Operational Oversight
- Supervise fuel delivery and handling operations
- Ensure consistent quality of fuel to all bunkers
- Coordinate coal train deliveries and switching with rail service or vessel
- Administer switching and tagging procedures
- Manage placement of spray dry absorber (SDA) by-product
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce Corporate Safety Manual, Procedures Manual, MIOSHA, and OSHA standards
- Oversee worker personal protection and address safety concerns/hazards
- Maintain fuel path housekeeping to meet combustible dust standards
- Deliver safety messages and lead safety-related teams and events
- Directly supervise union employees
- Lead coaching and development of team members
- Oversee grievance procedures, investigations, and disciplinary actions
- Execute time sheet approvals, training schedules, and PPE management
Maintenance & Quality
- Execute monthly maintenance plans and manage emergent repairs
- Manage fleet vehicle quality and repairs
- Ensure equipment integrity and continuity planning
- Lead and participate in Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Operating Reviews
- Identify and execute waste elimination and automation projects
- Utilize Lean methods and visual management tools
- Monitor departmental metrics and budget performance
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Scientific or Technical field (Required)
Experience
- 2–4 years of experience with conveyor systems and industrial equipment
- Technical experience in power plant operations through education and/or work experience (Required)
- Broad knowledge of union contract adherence
- Broad knowledge of corporate safety guidelines
- Strong leadership acumen
- Basic problem-solving skills
- Basic understanding of waste elimination and automation
- Basic presentation and public speaking skills
- Ability to transfer knowledge effectively
- Broad coaching and team leadership capabilities
- Basic understanding of Lean Thinking and first-time quality principles
Additional Duties
- Support creation and updating of visual management tools
- Educate team on Lean methods and ensure utilization
- Input and follow through on cost-saving ideas
- Participate in cross-functional teams and initiatives
- Understand and ensure adherence to environmental regulations
- Manage departmental budget and financial metrics
- Coordinate with on-call resources and oversee PPE acquisition and inspection
- Lead safety culture initiatives and ensure compliance with all safety standards
