POSITION HIRING RANGE: $35.09 – $40.67/hourly [Union Position Hiring range – Step 1-6]
SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for Fuel Operator position in the Department of Public Works. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Fuel Operator is responsible for safely dispensing fuel and lubricants to City vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery, while performing routine inspections, fluid servicing, and basic maintenance tasks. This position maintains accurate fuel inventory records, monitors fueling systems for safety and compliance, and supports general shop operations. This position services all heavy equipment and some light equipment. The Fuel Operator ensures fueling activities are conducted in accordance with OSHA, EPA, and City safety standards to support reliable fleet operations and emergency readiness.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of fueling procedures for gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuels used in light- to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe fuel handling, storage, and dispensing practices, including flammable liquid regulations and environmental compliance.
  • Skill in safely operating fuel trucks and related fueling equipment.
  • Skill in inspecting fueling equipment, tanks, and hoses to identify and report maintenance or safety issues.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and the City of Unalaska’s safety standards; ability and willingness to follow safety protocols and use PPE appropriately.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying and sometimes harsh environmental conditions, including noise, cold, wind, and precipitation.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Automotive trade school or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience in the vehicle repair industry required.
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire and obtain Alaska Bush CDL Class “B” with “X” endorsements, including medical certification.
  • Must be eligible to work in the US; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9) as required by Federal law.
  • Successfully pass a background check, which includes criminal background, reference, CDL, and drug test.
  • Maintain active and current certifications and licensing for the duration of employment.
