Job description

Department: Equipment / Field Operations
Reports to: Equipment Manager / Shop Foreman

Position Summary

We're hiring a Fuel & Lube Truck Operator to keep our heavy earthmoving fleet fueled, greased, and running. This is a hands-on field job. You'll drive a service truck between machines on active jobsites and fuel and lubricate each machine yourself. Keeping equipment serviced on schedule cuts downtime, so this role directly affects production and fleet life.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Drive a fuel/lube service truck safely on public roads and on rough, unimproved jobsite haul roads.
  • Fuel heavy earthmoving equipment in the field, including dozers, excavators, scrapers, loaders, articulated and off-road haul trucks, motor graders, and compactors.
  • Grease and lubricate machines by hand at every required point, following manufacturer specs and company PM schedules.
  • Check and top off engine oil, hydraulic oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and DEF.
  • Change oil and filters and handle other routine preventive maintenance as assigned.
  • Look over machines during service for leaks, damaged hoses, worn parts, and other problems, and report them quickly to the shop or superintendent.
  • Keep accurate daily logs of fuel issued, fluids added, machine hours, and service performed, on paper or electronically.
  • Do DOT pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and keep the fuel/lube truck, pumps, hoses, reels, and meters clean and working.
  • Handle, transfer, and store fuel, oils, and waste fluids according to DOT, EPA, and OSHA rules and company policy.
  • Prevent, contain, and report spills, and keep spill kits stocked and ready.
  • Coordinate service times with operators and foremen so production isn't interrupted.
  • Keep up the truck's inventory of fuel, lubricants, filters, and supplies.
  • Follow all company, jobsite, and MSHA/OSHA safety rules, including lockout/tagout and fire prevention.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Class B CDL or higher (Class A accepted).
  • Hazardous Materials (H) and Tank Vehicle (N) endorsements, or the combined X endorsement.
  • No "E" restriction (automatic transmission only). You must be licensed to drive CMVs with manual transmission.
  • Current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • Able to pass a DOT pre-employment drug screen and take part in random drug and alcohol testing under 49 CFR Part 382.
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets company insurance requirements.
  • Working knowledge of heavy-equipment lube points, fluid types, and basic preventive maintenance.
  • Able to keep clear, accurate written or electronic service records.
  • Strong safety focus, with good awareness of heavy equipment moving around you.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1+ years running a fuel/lube truck or working as a field service or lube technician on heavy construction, mining, or quarry equipment.
  • Familiarity with CAT, Komatsu, Deere, Volvo, or similar equipment.
  • Experience with fleet telematics or electronic fuel-tracking systems.
  • MSHA Part 46/48 training, or OSHA 10/30.
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Climb on and off heavy equipment and service truck many times a day, using ladders, steps, and grab handles.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs. regularly, including grease buckets, oil containers, and filters.
  • Pull and handle heavy fuel and lube hoses over uneven ground.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and reach overhead for long periods to get to lube points under and around machines.
  • Stand and walk on uneven, muddy, rocky, or sloped ground for most of the shift.
  • Work outdoors in all weather, including extreme heat, cold, rain, dust, and noise.
  • Wear required PPE at all times: hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, steel-toe boots, gloves, and hearing protection.
Work Schedule
  • Early starts are common, since machines are often serviced before or after production shifts.
  • Overtime, weekends, and extended hours may be required depending on project needs.
