Job description

Application close date: Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers (use as appropriate), you will be responsible for developing the Fuel Cell Generator’s controls algorithms for autonomous operation on human rated vehicles. You will integrate controls of all mechanical, thermal, fluids, gaseous, and electrical power functions of the Fuel Cell Generator assembly. You may also represent the Fuel Cell Generator component in cross-functional trades, interface definition, and impact studies. This is a high visibility, high criticality role where you will get to make your mark from early development to product validation and mission operations. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required! Special Mentions Relocation provided.

Responsibilities
  • Develop mechanical, electrical, thermal, fluid, and gaseous control systems through the program lifecycle, including requirements development, design, implementation, and verification.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, and algorithms together in software to produce a spaceflight-ready application.
  • This includes I/O transducers for displacement, rate, and acceleration; pressure and temperature sensors; servo and solenoid actuators; etc.
  • Modify signal processing, control, or related algorithms to run efficiently on embedded platforms.
  • Integrate and test software solutions during real-time software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
  • Support the development of low and high-fidelity plant models, perform analysis, and design efficient logic algorithms and state machines to manage and control various mechanical and electrical actuators.
  • Assist in the development of verification and validation procedures to ensure all products perform as specified to meet system and subsystem requirements.
  • Plan and develop certification strategies for safe human-rated flight according to industry standards (e.g., DO-178 or NPR 7150).
  • Support the development and execution of ground and flight test operations.
Required Qualifications
  • B.S. degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Physics, or related technical disciplines
  • 3+ years’ experience developing real-time embedded control solutions for complex aerospace mechanical, electrical, thermal, fluid, and gas systems
  • Experience with subsystem modeling, analysis, and controls application development tools such as Matlab/Simulink, including autocoding
  • Experience with validation and verification approaches such as unit testing, system simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or integrated subsystem testing
  • Experience with Git or similar revision control systems
  • Exposure to lean software development practices and techniques; including experience with tool automation and software development using Python and C/C++
  • Experience developing embedded control system solutions that comply with human safety standards (e.g., DO-178 and/or NPR 7150)
  • Experience working collaboratively in small teams on fast-paced projects
  • Ability to effectively use oral and written communication to express technical concepts and recommendations to personnel at all technical and managerial levels
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
Desired Qualifications
  • M.S. degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Physics, or related technical disciplines
  • 5+ years’ experience developing embedded control solutions for complex aerospace mechanical, thermal, fluid, and gas systems
  • Experience modeling and analyzing control solutions with I/O transducers: displacement, rate, and acceleration sensors; pressure and temperature sensors; servo and solenoid actuators; etc.
  • Experience across the full product development lifecycle: concept definition, architecture, requirements capture and development, implementation, verification, system integration, qualification, and release
