Description

Do you have a passion for helping athletes stay healthy? Shaw University is seeking an Assistant Athletic Trainer. Reporting to the Head Athletic Trainer, the Assistant oversees prevention, evaluation, care, treatment, and rehabilitation of injured athletes. The role involves working closely with the Athletic Department to ensure the health and safety of student-athletes, providing coverage in the athletic training room, traveling with teams, and managing injury care and prevention.

Essential Job Functions
  • Recognize and evaluate athletic injuries.
  • Coordinate medical coverage during practices and events.
  • Evaluate and treat injuries; oversee rehabilitation.
  • Refer athletes for physical assessments as needed.
  • Provide coverage during practices and games.
  • Perform taping, wrapping, and provide water and ice.
  • Manage department inventory and supplies.
  • Supervise and educate student and graduate assistant athletic trainers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or related field; minimum 1 year of collegiate or professional experience; Master’s preferred.
  • Willingness to travel extensively; evening and weekend work required.
  • Knowledge of injury prevention and evaluation techniques.
  • Familiarity with NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA rules.
  • Bi-lingual skills are a plus.
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations

Valid North Carolina driver’s license, NATABOC certification, and NC licensure required. CPR & First Aid/AED certification preferred.

Other Competencies

Alignment with the organization’s mission and values, strong communication skills, organizational ability, independence, teamwork, and the capacity to manage multiple projects. Must pass a Motor Vehicle Records check and be fluent in English.

Physical Demands

Ability to sit or stand for up to 8 hours daily, travel up to 50%, work long and odd hours, and lift over 50 pounds.
