The City of Bozeman Swim Department is seeking full-time and part-time Lifeguard & Swim Instructors who are confident, detail oriented, quick thinkers, and team oriented to perform essential lifeguarding duties.

You will guide Lifeguard Instructor I and II, ensure patron safety at indoor and outdoor facilities, and assist in aquatics program instruction, maintenance, and chemical testing to maintain water balance. A comprehensive benefits package is offered.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• 6 months aquatics or lifeguarding experience required.
• CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certification (expired acceptable at hire).
• Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification within six months of employment.
• Thorough knowledge of swimming and lifeguarding techniques.
• Ability to operate point‑of‑sale and pass registration computer program.

Responsibilities

• Perform life-saving and guarding duties and enforce pool rules for safe operation.
• Provide aquatics program instruction and develop lesson plans.
• Test and monitor chemical balance in water and adjust as directed.
• Open and close facilities and maintain cleanliness of pools and locker rooms.
• Handle cashier functions and reconcile funds.

The City of Bozeman Swim Department is now accepting applications for full-time and part-time Lifeguard & Swim Instructors who are confident, detail oriented, quick thinkers, and team oriented to perform critical lifeguarding duties. They will provide direction to the Lifeguard Instructor I and II’s, ensure patron safety at the indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities, provide important aquatics program instruction, and assist in the maintenance, upkeep, and custodial duties of the pool facilities, test chemicals and respond to protocol to help maintain water balance, and manages the facilities in the absence of upper management.

Wage: Full-Time: $24.22 - $26.47 per hour depending on experience
Part-Time: $24.22 per hour

Work Week: FT: 40 hours/week
PT: 15 hours per week schedule preferred, but alternative schedules will be considered over 8 hours per week.
Current operations are Monday - Friday from 5am - 9:00pm with plans to expand to weekends which may include Saturday and/or Sunday shifts of 7:30am - 4:30pm.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

• Performs life-saving and guarding duties, including assisting patrons in life threatening situations, enforcing pool rules and regulations for the efficient and safe operation of the aquatic facilities, providing active accident prevention, and monitoring patrons in the water, and completing rescue accident and incident reports.
• Provides customer service, including answering questions, referring customers to other agencies or organizations when necessary, accepting payment for passes, parties, lessons, and programs, answering phones and directing calls, and registering patrons for programs.
• Provides aquatics programs instruction to patrons, including composing lesson plans, demonstrating proper stroke techniques and awareness, ensuring safety of children and adults by watching for potential hazards and dangerous situations, and teaching water safety and pool rules.
• Maintains a clean and safe swimming facility, including cleaning locker rooms, lobby area, pool deck, and restrooms, and ensuring pool, equipment room, and pool deck are clear of potentially dangerous objects or situations.
• Opens and closes facilities.
• Tests and monitors chemical balance in water and changes to water chemistry as directed.
• Performs cashier functions, including taking payments and reconciling funds received with transaction register.
• Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
• Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
• Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
• Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
• Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
• Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

• Must be at least 16 years old, and
• 6 months experience in aquatics or lifeguarding is required, and
• Must possess and maintain the following:
  • Red Cross Lifeguarding with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certification (expired certification acceptable at hire).
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification within six months of employment in the position.

• Thorough knowledge of swimming and lifeguarding techniques.
• Thorough knowledge of First Aid, CPR, and use of AED.
• Thorough knowledge of stabilization of victims with spinal cord injuries and other life‑threatening injuries.
• Thorough knowledge of proper aquatic teaching techniques of all ages and levels of ability.
• Thorough knowledge of pool water chemistry.
• Some knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, community and recreation programs.
• Ability to properly perform rescues.
• Ability to instruct individuals on pool and water safety.
