Check out the latest Whatnot updates on our news and engineering blogs, and join us to turn your passion into a business and bring people together through commerce.

Trust & Safety Engineering Team

This team is dedicated to building systems and features that ensure our users have positive and safe experiences on Whatnot. We believe everyone is entitled to thrive on our platform.

  • As a Software Engineer on the T&S team, you will build systems to help users moderate their shows, assist our internal team in actioning and mitigating issues, solve complex system problems for monitoring and detecting bad behavior from large data sets, and develop scalable solutions for our growth.
  • Key qualities include making sound product decisions, navigating new domains seamlessly, taking extreme ownership, and shipping high-quality products quickly. We prioritize high-impact features and rapid deployment.
  • The software team values individual responsibility and autonomy. We seek trustworthy individuals who can exercise good judgment and make effective trade-offs.

Team members in this role should be within commuting distance of our hubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, or New York.

We’ve found that low ego, a growth mindset, and a bias for action and high impact are traits that thrive at Whatnot.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent product instincts, focusing on user needs over purely technical solutions.
  • Ability to implement pixel-perfect designs as specified by the design team.
  • Comfort sharing insights, providing constructive feedback, and bringing outside perspectives.
  • Understanding of backend technologies and creating seamless frontend-backend connections.
  • Proven track record of delivering end-to-end features.
  • Strong ownership instincts, capable of managing projects from inception through deployment and beyond.
  • Experience with complex web tooling (dashboards, shipping tools) is a plus.
  • Startup experience in a high-growth environment is a plus.

Salary range: $185,000 to $205,000 per year plus benefits and equity. The final salary depends on experience, skills, and level.

Benefits
  • Health insurance options including Medical, Dental, and Vision.
  • Work from home support, including a home office setup allowance and monthly allowances for cellphone and internet.
  • Retirement plans, including 401(k) with employer match up to 4% in the US, and pension plans internationally.
  • Monthly allowance for app dogfooding to develop a deep understanding of our product (all employees are expected to use Whatnot as buyers and sellers).
  • Paid parental leave: 16 weeks plus a one-month gradual return to work (company leave allowances run concurrently with country-specific leave requirements).

Whatnot is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value diversity and do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, parental status, disability, or any other protected status. We believe that diversity enriches our work and company culture.
