Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. is seeking Conductors to safely move freight trains. You will build trains by coupling railcars, inspect equipment, and operate remote control locomotives. Training is provided; no prior railroad experience is required.

This role is safety-sensitive with 24/7 on-call availability, about 2–3 days away from home weekly, and requires joining a union within 60 days after training. First-year conductors average around $70,000 per year, with higher earnings for engineers.

Qualifications

• Preferred outdoor work experience.
• Experience with heavy equipment is a plus.
• Comfort with non-traditional shifts and on-call work.

Responsibilities

• Build and inspect trains, railcars, and equipment for safe operation.
• Operate remote control locomotives and couple/uncouple equipment.
• Communicate effectively with crews, dispatchers, and yard controllers.
• Maintain accurate documentation and comply with FRA safety regulations.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
• Be available to report to work within 90 minutes and work 24/7.
