Job summary

FedEx Freight, Inc. is seeking a dock associate in Sioux City, IA to move freight between dock and trailers. The role includes operating forklifts and pallet jacks, verifying shipping papers, and securing loads for transport.

The job requires basic math, good communication, and the ability to lift heavy freight and work in a fast-paced dock environment. Prior dock/warehouse experience is preferred; shift is from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Prior warehousing, freight handling and/or forklift operations experience preferred.
• If hostler/yard mule duties required, experience preferred.
• Ability to count and perform basic math with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight of varying weights several times a week, lift dock plates up to ~100 pounds, open trailer doors with up to ~75 pounds lift.
• Ability to bend, twist, squat, push/pull freight throughout shift.
• Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team.
• Previous dock/warehouse experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Transport freight across dock area to/from trailers for loading to trailers.
• Perform freight handling using forklift, pallet jack and hand truck.
• Verify documentation matches freight description (type, weight, hazardous materials).
• Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, rope, etc.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight as needed.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Assist customers with freight and freight documentation as needed.
• Perform hostling duties if required.
• Comply with all laws/regulations and company policies.
• Perform other duties as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Age 18+

Warehousing/freight handling experience

Forklift operations experience (preferred)

Hostler/yard mule experience (preferred)

Basic math ability

Communication skills (written & verbal)

Physical ability to lift/carry heavy freight

Teamwork / independent work capability

Job description

Starting Rate of Pay: $ 21.16 per hour

Shift Time: 1730-2100

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Transport freight across dock area to/from trailers for loading to trailers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including but not limited to: forklift, pallet jack and hand truck.

• Verify documentation matches freight description (e.g. type, weight, hazardous materials), using current electronic or manual system.

• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies (e.g. pallets, straps, rope).

• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.

• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.

• Assist customers with freight and freight documentation as needed.

• Perform hostling duties if required.

• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures.

• Perform other duties as required.

• Previous dock/warehouse experience preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Dock environment; exposure to varied weather conditions, exhaust, fumes, dust, noise.

• Hours may vary due to operational need.

• Frequent contact with service center personnel; fast-paced, deadline oriented.
