Job summary

Gordon Food Service is seeking a Freight Handler for multiple shifts in our Concord, NC distribution center. You will remove pallets from trailers, break down goods for proper pallet configuration, and separate inbound freight by item code.

Training is provided; prior experience is welcome but not required. You must be able to work in extreme cold or hot conditions, read and speak English, and pass a background check and drug test.

Qualifications

• None required, prior warehouse experience preferred.
• Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Able to work holidays, weekends, and overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

• Separates inbound freight by item code onto good pallets.
• Breaks down pallets to correct height and width (Ti/Hi) per GFS specs.
• Ensures proper pallet configuration and wrap; maintains clean work area.
• Accounts for damaged product and excludes it from sale inventory.
• Operates basic warehouse tools and equipment and completes housekeeping daily.

Work Schedule:

Sunday - Thursday work week, with Friday and Saturdays off

1st shift starting at 6am until work is finished (shifts vary based on work volume)

Gordon Food Service takes pride in delivering seamless order processing and delivery to our customers, and our warehouse staff is the backbone of our success. As a freight handler, you'll support our team by safely removing pallets of product from the trailer and breaking down the product for the correct pallet configuration. You will also separate inbound freight by item code onto good pallets, ensure that damaged product is properly accounted for and not received into the warehouse for sale inventory, and account for the structural integrity of pallets. There's no experience required - we'll train you how to get the job done!

• Must be able to work holidays, weekends, and overtime as needed - holidays are very important to our customers!
• We have frozen products - your ability to work in extreme cold or hot conditions (-25F to 100F) is required while you're here.
• Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
• Successfully pass a drug test that will assess drug usage and a background check.
• Prior warehouse experience preferred, but not required.

Position Summary:

Breaks down the product for the correct pallet configuration.

Essential Functions:

• Separates inbound freight by item code onto good pallets.
• Break down pallets of product to the correct height and width (Ti/Hi) according to the GFS ti/hi sheet.
• Ensures placement of product in sufficient quantities to accommodate routine and/or special demands.
• Ensures that damaged product is properly accounted for and not received into the warehouse for sale inventory.
• Sorts and disposes of boxes.
• Ensures the finished pallet load is wrapped with shrink wrap, loose wrap removed, case flaps are secured and product placed on a pallet that meets GFS specification.
• Maintains an organized and clean work area.
• Completes housekeeping activities on a daily basis.
• Adheres to the mission and cornerstone values and applicable practices of the organization.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

• Ability to work in a fast paced, physically demanding environment requiring constant walking, ascending/descending stairs or pallet jack platform, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, grasp on a frequent to continual basis in a warehouse environment.
• Must be able to read, write and communicate in English (to read labels, pick lists, scanners, signage, company website information related to benefits, updates, complete paperwork and follow verbal instructions).
• Must be able to work independently or within a team environment.
• Must adhere to all safety regulations and procedures.
• Employees in all warehouse positions must be able to immediately perceive auditory warning signals such as bells, alarms, and horns that are used to warn employees of the startup, movement, or approach of equipment (including forklifts, turrets, overhead cranes, conveyors, trucks, and other equipment operated inside or outside the warehouse), mechanical abnormalities, and similar risk situations during warehouse operations.

Equipment / Tools / Technology:

• Must be able to understand and operate the basic functions of a Radio Frequency handheld computer.

Educational & Experience Requirements:

• None required, prior warehouse experience preferred.
• High School / Equivalent Preferred
• Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV) certification must be obtained upon hire and maintained during employment
