Title: Freelance Court Interpreter – Common Languages
Location: Nationwide
Security Clearance: N/A

Travel: On site with some travel as required by program need

Schedule: Hearings are typically scheduled between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding Government holidays. Interpreters must be prepared for on-site assignments at various local hearing locations or provide telephonic interpretation as required. Must be available to travel to other locations nationwide for hearings, as needed.
Hourly: $30-60/hr

Job Summary:

TPG Analytics is seeking highly qualified and professional interpreters to provide on-site and scheduled telephonic interpretation services for the Department of Justice (DOJ), Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR). Interpreters will play a critical role in ensuring effective communication during immigration court proceedings by interpreting spoken and written communications accurately and impartially.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide consecutive and simultaneous interpretation during immigration court hearings.
  • Conduct sight translations of documents as needed.
  • Ensure all interpretations are complete, accurate, and convey the original meaning without alterations.
  • Arrive at hearing locations on time and remain for the duration of the work order unless dismissed earlier by the Government.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to the Code of Professional Responsibility for interpreters.

Minimum Qualifications & Skills:

  • Requires at least one year of experience interpreting in a judicial environment.
  • Must be certified or professionally qualified as an interpreter through the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts (for Spanish, Navajo, Haitian Creole) or recognized organizations such as the National Center for State Courts, American Translators Association, or NAJIT.
  • Must hold any additional certifications or licenses required by the state in which work is being performed.
  • Highly proficient in English and at least one of the following languages, with strong skills in formal, consultative, and casual communication, including slang and regionalisms: Punjabi, Russian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Creole, Arabic, Bengali, French, Uzbek, Hindi, Wolof, Georgian - Soviet Republic, Turkish, Nepali, Pulaar, and/or Mam.
  • Demonstrates excellence in simultaneous, consecutive interpretation, and sight translation.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with legal terminology and immigration procedures is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Immigration Court process, terminology, and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate speed and clarity while interpreting.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Adherence to the professional ethics of interpretation, including impartiality and confidentiality.

Security Requirements/Background Investigation Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.
  • Successfully passing a background investigation including drug screening.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Standing/Walking/Mobility: Must have mobility to attend court hearings.
  • Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling: 10% of the time.
  • Lifting/Pulling/Pushing: 10% of the time.
  • Fingering/Grasping/Feeling: Must be able to write, type and use a telephone system 100% of the time.
  • Sitting: Sitting for prolonged and extended periods of time.
