Job summary

voestalpine Railway Systems Nortrak in Decatur, Illinois, seeks a Foundry Metallurgist / Casting Engineer to ensure high‑quality castings through process control and metallurgy expertise. You will supervise process control, QA, and test trials, collaborating with design and production teams to optimize manufacturing.

The role requires 5+ years in steel foundry engineering and strong analytical skills. Reporting to the Foundry Technical Manager, this on‑site position offers a competitive salary

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably in Materials Science or Metallurgy.
• At least five years’ experience in steel foundry in an engineering or technical position.
• Experience with data analysis tools like MiniTab or other statistics software.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
• Proficiency in metallurgical testing and analysis methods.
• Understanding of thermodynamics, phase diagrams, and material properties.
• Familiarity with metallurgical software and analysis tools.

Responsibilities

• Review and approve foundry work instructions and PPE requirements to ensure safe operation.
• Manage process control data and effect process changes to reduce scrap and improve quality.
• Train foremen, supervisors, and operators in metal quality, sand control, and casting best practices.
• Troubleshoot heat‑treatment issues and calibrate equipment to ensure proper results.
• Develop plans to improve foundry productivity and timely moulding/riging verification.
• Collaborate with design and production teams to optimize manufacturing processes.
