Forward Deployed Engineer (Entry Level)
Company: LexLabs
Location: San francisco / Remote
Employment Type: Full-time
About LexLabs
LexLabs builds an autonomous orchestration layer for operations: an AI platform that detects exceptions, automates supply chain coordination, and resolves issues before they reach the jobsite. Our mission is to help companies transform how they work, bringing Decision Intelligence to life so organizations can make smarter, faster decisions at scale.
About the Role
As a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) at LexLabs, you will sit at the intersection of engineering and customer success. You will work directly with customers to understand their real-world problems, then design, build, and deploy solutions tailored to their needs. This is a hands‑on, high‑ownership role for someone who is curious, relentlessly self‑driven, and energized by turning messy requirements into working software.
Innovation is a core requirement of this role. We expect every Forward Deployed Engineer to be a voracious reader and learner who arrives each day with new, well‑reasoned ideas for doing things faster and smarter without compromising quality, and who shares those ideas with the team and puts them into practice.
What You Will Do
- Partner with customers to understand their workflows, pain points, and goals, and translate them into clear technical requirements.
- Build, configure, and tailor LexLabs solutions to fit each customer's environment and use case.
- Deploy and maintain solutions on cloud infrastructure, ensuring they are reliable, secure, and scalable.
- Work with customer data: clean, analyze, and model it to uncover insights and validate that solutions deliver measurable value.
- Write clean, well‑documented code and scripts, primarily in VS Code and its surrounding tooling (extensions, debuggers, Git integration, remote development).
- Troubleshoot issues in the field, own them through to resolution, and communicate clearly with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Innovate every day: bring at least one well‑considered idea to the team each day, whether a faster workflow, a smarter automation, a better tool, or a quality improvement, and be ready to explain your reasoning and trade‑offs. Generating and sharing ideas is a core expectation of this role, not an optional extra.
- Feed customer learnings back to Product and Engineering to shape the roadmap.
What We're Looking For Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's / Masters degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong working knowledge of VS Code, including debugging, extensions, terminals, Git workflows, and remote/container development.
- Hands‑on experience with cloud deployment on AWS, Azure, or GCP (e.g., compute, storage, containers, CI/CD basics).
- Solid understanding of data science fundamentals: data wrangling, statistics, exploratory analysis, and basic machine learning concepts.
- Proficiency in Python, SQL
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to listen closely, ask good questions, and explain technical concepts simply.
- A voracious appetite for reading and learning: you follow new tools, papers, and industry trends, and you naturally turn what you learn into practical improvements.
- Demonstrated initiative and innovation (required): a track record of proposing and implementing better ways of working, and the commitment to bring new ideas to the team every day while keeping quality high.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience or coursework in supply chain, logistics, procurement, inventory, or operations.
- Familiarity with ERP, WMS, or TMS systems and common supply chain data models.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, or similar infrastructure tools.
- Internship, capstone, or personal projects that show end‑to‑end ownership, from understanding a problem to deploying a solution.
- Comfort working in fast‑paced, customer‑facing environments.
What Makes You Successful Here
- Customer obsession: you dig into the "why" behind every request and tailor solutions rather than forcing one-size-fits-all.
- Curiosity and speed of learning: you pick up new domains, tools, and customer contexts quickly.
- Bias for action with a quality bar: you move fast, test thoroughly, and never ship something you wouldn't stand behind.
- Ownership: you see problems through from first conversation to production.
- Collaboration: you share what you learn and make the whole team better.
You Are a Fit If
- You read widely and consistently (technical blogs, papers, documentation, industry news) and can describe something you learned recently that changed how you work.
- You come to the table every day with at least one new idea to improve speed, efficiency, or quality, and you can explain your reasoning.
- You enjoy working directly with customers, asking probing questions, and shaping a solution around their real needs rather than a template.
- You are at home in VS Code and comfortable deploying and running work in the cloud.
- You think like a data scientist: you test assumptions, let the data guide decisions, and measure results.
- You hold a high quality bar and believe speed and rigor can go together.
- You are curious about supply chain and operations, and want to learn how goods, information, and decisions move through them. If this describes you, we would like to hear from you.
