Job summary

Beacon is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to partner with portfolio companies, building software and AI-powered workflows that address real business needs in a hands-on, customer-facing role. You’ll work directly with operators to understand processes and deploy practical solutions.

You’ll own end-to-end delivery across backend services, APIs, frontend apps, integrations, and data, using LLMs and AI tools. Some travel to portfolio sites will be required to align with stakeholders.

Qualifications

• 3-6 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with Python or TypeScript.
• Experience developing applications using LLMs, generative AI, or AI APIs.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with portfolio company teams to understand business processes and identify high-value opportunities for software and AI.
• Build and ship production applications and AI-powered workflows from concept through deployment.
• Develop across the stack, including backend services, APIs, frontend applications, integrations, and data.
• Use LLMs and AI technologies to build practical solutions for real operational workflows.
• Integrate new solutions with existing applications, APIs, and data sources.
• Test, monitor, evaluate, and improve systems after deployment based on real-world usage and outcomes.
• Work closely with portfolio company leaders and operators to understand problems, communicate solutions, and build trust.
• Take ownership of deployed systems and troubleshoot or improve them as requirements evolve.
• Identify successful patterns and approaches that can be reused across other portfolio companies.

Office: On-site at least 3 days per week, with frequent travel to portfolio company sites.

About the Role

We're looking for a Forward Deployed Engineer to work directly with Beacon's portfolio companies and build software that solves real business and operational problems. This is a highly hands-on engineering role. You'll work directly with company operators to understand how their teams work, identify opportunities where software and AI can create leverage, and then build, deploy, and improve the solution yourself. The right person is not simply an AI engineer or a traditional software developer. We're looking for someone who can combine strong software engineering skills, practical AI/LLM experience, and the ability to work directly with customers and non-technical stakeholders.

Required Skills

• Strong hands-on experience with Python or TypeScript.
• Experience building and shipping production software.
• Experience developing applications using LLMs, generative AI, or AI APIs.
• Comfortable owning work end-to-end, from understanding the problem through deployment and ongoing improvement.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively when requirements are not fully defined.
• Ability to communicate directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Based in or willing to relocate to New York, NY.
• Comfortable with frequent travel to portfolio company sites.

Preferred Skills

• Experience working directly with customers, clients, users, or business stakeholders.
• Experience in a Forward Deployed Engineer, Customer Engineer, Solutions Engineer, Product Engineer, or similar hands-on role.
• Experience working in an early-stage or high-growth environment.
• Experience with React and SQL.
• Experience building integrations or automating business workflows.
