Job Summary:
The Formulation Chemist is a hands-on, in-lab research and development role responsible for formulating, testing, and supporting the development of clean-label dietary supplements and cosmetic products. This position focuses on lab bench work to support the company's product innovation pipeline. The Formulation Chemist plays a critical role in creating prototypes, preparing samples, conducting experiments, and recording detailed formulation data to support compliance, quality, and innovation efforts.
This role is essential to developing stable, effective, and scalable formulations that align with the company's natural and organic standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support development of dietary supplements in various formats, using real-food-based and natural ingredients.
- Assist in weighing, blending, and mixing sample batches using liposomes, emulsions, or standard blending techniques.
- Prepare and test formulas for taste, texture, and dispersion.
- Record theoretical yield, ingredient weights, and processing conditions for all test batches.
- Help identify ingredient compatibility or solubility issues and communicate findings to directors.
- Maintain detailed lab notebooks and digital records for all formulation trials and revisions.
- Assist in creating batch record data, sample tracking sheets, and formulation change documentation.
- Follow all cGMP lab procedures and support readiness for internal or external audits.
- Assist in developing a wide range of cosmetic products, including lotions, serums, oils, cleansers, scrubs, balms, deodorants, and shampoos/conditioners.
- Weigh, mix, and prepare lab batches based on provided formulation guidelines.
- Adjust formulations based on lab observations and feedback from the R&D team.
- Record formulation data and observations including pH, viscosity, texture, and separation.
- Support testing of formulations for performance, stability, and compatibility with packaging.
- Maintain clean and organized lab space, ensuring proper labeling and retention of all samples.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, Nutritional Sciences, or a related scientific field.
- Minimum of 2-5 years of hands-on formulation experience in dietary supplements, cosmetics, or personal care, with natural and organic formulation experience.
- Understanding of emulsion systems, pH, natural preservatives, surfactants, botanical extracts, and supplement bioavailability.
- Familiarity with good lab practices (GLP), cGMP manufacturing requirements, and cosmetic/supplement regulations.
- Strong attention to detail and disciplined documentation skills.
- Proficient in Excel and lab software/tools for formulation tracking and calculations.
- Comfortable working independently in a lab setting and operating R&D laboratory equipment used in formulation development.
- Strong communication skills, self-motivated, curious, and enthusiastic about working with natural, organic, and innovative ingredients.
Bonus Skills (not required):
- Knowledge of functional fragrance/aromatherapy principles or essential oil compatibility.
- Familiarity with global cosmetic regulations (EU, Canada, Australia) and current market trends.
