Job summary

HII's Newport News Shipbuilding operates in Goose Creek, SC and seeks a skilled machinist to work with light-duty bench- or floor-type tools. You will set up machines, perform adjustments, and inspect parts to meet precise tolerances.

Responsibilities include using lathes, mills, drills and related equipment, maintaining machines, and verifying quality with gauges. Requires a HS diploma plus 2 years of related experience; apprentices or associates may qualify with 1 year experience.

  • Apprentice graduate or Associate's Degree in relevant discipline with 1 year related experience.

The Role

Operates light-duty bench- or floor-type machine tools and equipment such as small lathes, power mills, extruding machines, drills or punch presses, power brakes, shears or saws. May set up machining machines and make adjustments, and perform maintenance on machines. Checks work using prescribed gauges, jigs and fixtures to measure close tolerances. Some machines may be numerically controlled. May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.

Must Have

High School diploma or equivalent and 2 years additional education and/or related experience; Apprentice graduate/ Associate's Degree in relevant discipline and 1 year of related experience. May require certification.
