Job summary

Precision Castparts in California is seeking an experienced shop technician to polish, grind and finish contoured metal surfaces for forging dies and tooling. You will perform cleaning, inspection and manual finishing with minimal supervision.

The role requires reading and interpreting safety rules, instructions and procedures, plus a background in precision metalwork and hands-on use of grinding tools. Physical requirements apply.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED, or equivalent experience.
• 3–5 years of related experience and/or training.
• Must possess Shultz Steel Company certifications in Overhead Crane Operator and Mobile Equipment (Forklift).

Responsibilities

• Possesses thorough knowledge of die polishing and grinding techniques.
• Performs liquid penetrant inspection of dies to determine wear, cracks and other defects. Documents die condition.
• Identifies defects and die wear; identifies dies with job number and function.
• Selects abrasive tools according to operation and dimensions specified.
• Manipulates powered hand grinder to remove beads, grind curved surfaces to specified radii, remove machining marks, and smooth die surfaces.

Thorough knowledge which allows employee to wash, scrape, polish, grind and sand contoured metal surfaces to finish forging dies, trimmers and other tooling by performing the following duties, with minimal supervision.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Possesses thorough knowledge of die polishing and grinding techniques.
• Performs liquid penetrant inspection of dies to determine wear, cracks and other defects. Documents die condition.
• Identifies defects and die wear; identifies dies with job number and function.
• Selects abrasive tools according to operation and dimensions specified.
• Manipulates powered hand grinder to remove bead, grind curved surfaces to specified radii, remove machining marks, and smooth die surfaces; sand surfaces of cavity and gutters to facilitate flow of metal during forging; manipulates hand tools, such as files, stones, and emery cloth, to smooth surfaces.
• Operates pressure wash die cleaning tank.
• Supports other Tooling related duties as required.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before management and other Company employees.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates or Licenses

Must possess Shultz Steel Company certifications in the following: Overhead Crane Operator and Mobile Equipment (Forklift).

Experience & Education

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
