Job summary

Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) seeks a Forestry Supervisor to lead the Forestry/Trust Lands Division. You will oversee program administration, supervise staff, and drive forestry objectives with a focus on school trust lands within the unit's jurisdiction.

The role includes direct wildland fire management support, conference representation, and coordination of professional forest management activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forest Management or related field.
  • Four years of progressively responsible forest management experience.
  • At least one year of supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States and possess a valid driver’s license with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent 36 months.
  • Pass an arduous pack test.

Job description

Job Title: Forestry Supervisor – Forest Management Supervisor (26141875)

Position Summary

The Forestry/Trust Lands Division (FTLD) of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) plans and implements forestry and fire management programs. The Forestry Supervisor leads program administration, advanced professional forestry functions, and revenue‑generating activities for school trust funds within the unit’s jurisdiction. The incumbent represents the Department to the public, environmental groups, other agencies, media, and cooperators, and manages concurrent projects in the forestry program.

Essential Functions (Major Duties and Responsibilities)
  • Program Leadership, Planning, Development – 85% of time: Responsible for program administration, supervision, and development of techniques to meet the Trust Land Management Division’s forestry objectives.
  • Wildland Fire Management – 10% of time: Provide direct wildland fire suppression and assistance to county and rural fire departments.
  • Other Duties as Assigned – 15% of time: Perform a variety of professional forest and trust land management activities, represent the department at conferences and meetings, direct special projects, and participate in ongoing education and training.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Forest Management or a related resource management field.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible job‑related professional experience in forest management.
  • At least one (1) year of demonstrated supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States and possess a valid driver’s license with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent 36 months.
  • Pass an arduous pack test.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of: effective supervisory practices, conflict resolution methods, forest management principles, forest practices and related laws, MT Environmental Policy Act, state and federal natural resource management regulations.
  • Skills In: operating tools, equipment, vehicles (4‑wheel drive, ATV, UTV), use of computer hardware and software, specialized resource management software.
  • Ability to: manage and evaluate projects, prepare and present reports, provide technical assistance and program information to management, clients, or public groups, perform financial analyses, interpret and apply state and federal laws and regulations.
