Job description

Job Description and Duties

CAL FIRE is recruiting approximately 150 temporary Defensible Space Inspector (Forestry Aide) positions statewide. Primary duties include performing defensible space inspections and interacting with the public to provide fire prevention information. All appointments are temporary and will not become permanent.

Annual responsibilities include:

  • Perform defensible space inspections in accordance with Public Resources Code Section 4291.
  • Increase awareness, knowledge and actions implemented by individuals and communities to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Completion of at least 12 semester units or 18 quarter units from a recognized accredited college or university in forestry or fire science, natural resource management, conservation, or a closely related subject.
  • Experience: Three (3) months of experience with public or private entities performing sub-professional work in forestry, fire prevention, fire suppression and control, natural resource management, or other related work.
Working Conditions

Incumbents are required to wear respiratory protection equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). They must be annually medically cleared to be fit-tested for respiratory protection equipment. Duties involve fieldwork requiring above-average physical endurance and the ability to run, walk, climb, jump, twist, bend, lift over 25 pounds, and work under adverse environmental conditions.

Desirable Qualifications

California Driver's License is desired but not required.
