Job description

General Responsibilities: This person locates standing Poplar and hardwood timber to supply Columbia Forest Products, Craigsville, WV, and Old Fort, NC, hardwood plywood facilities, and negotiates purchase contracts with landowners for such timber. This individual is also responsible for purchasing Poplar peeler logs from independent loggers, concentration yards, and sawmills. They negotiate with loggers to cut the stumpage tracts and administer the terms of the timber cutting contracts. The forester is responsible for selling off the non-peeler species from the timber tracts purchased and is considered an area manager.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Locating and cruising timber tracts.
  2. Negotiating the sale of timber on tracts.
  3. Meeting volume goals set for the specific territory.
  4. Managing timber costs appropriate for the territory.
  5. Ensuring boundaries on tracts are correct and resolving disputes.
  6. Developing budgets for deliveries and costs to meet volume goals.
  7. Representing the company in professional and industry associations.
  8. Scheduling the logging of purchased tracts.
  9. Ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations related to "Best Management Practices" and timber harvesting.
  10. Overseeing road layout and marking SMZs.
  11. Determining acreage using GPS.
  12. Developing pre-harvest plans.
  13. Administering logging contracts.
  14. Performing other procurement-related duties.

Qualifications:

  1. Preferably a related degree from a technical forestry school or equivalent experience.
  2. At least 5 years of experience as a procurement forester.
  3. GIS experience is a plus but not required.
  4. Proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Word, and Access.
  5. Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  6. A self-starter, highly motivated, capable of working independently.
  7. Good driving record.

Education: Associates degree required.
