Job summary

Office of Chief Medical Examiner in New York City seeks a Forensic Mortuary Technician I to assist in daily mortuary operations and support autopsy-related tasks. You will work with the Mortuary Operations Supervisors to manage intake, storage, and release of remains while maintaining accurate records.

The role requires a high school diploma and 1 year of mortuary or autopsy experience, plus a NY driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Four-year high school diploma or equivalent and one year of full-time experience in mortuary and/or autopsy work.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Mortuary Operations Supervisors in daily unit operations and follow directions.
  • Perform mortuary procedures and decedent handling, including intake, storage, release, photos, and fingerprinting.
  • Prepare incident reports, schedules and statistics as needed.
  • Operate the OCME Case Management System (CMS) and CMS Mobile App for death certificates and burial permits.
  • Ensure mortuary areas are clean, stocked and sanitized daily.
  • Report all complaints, accidents and incidents to proper personnel.
  • Perform City Morgue Technician duties as needed.
  • Weigh and move remains; load records to storage and assist with city burials.
  • Drive to death scenes to perform case recovery as required.

Job description

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

This is a temporary position, concluding two years from start date

The Forensic Mortuary Technician I tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting the Mortuary Operations Supervisors in day-to-day unit operations and following their directions. .
  • Performing all Mortuary Procedures and decedent handling (METT, Check In, Storage, Release of Remains, Intake and Release photos, and Fingerprinting).
  • Preparing incident reports, schedules, and statistics as needed.
  • Operate OCME Case Management System (CMS), CMS Mobile App, and other systems as needed, for all documents (Death Certificates, Burial Permits) relating to the intake and release of remains.
  • Ensuring that the Mortuary areas are properly cleaned, stocked, and sanitized daily
  • Reporting all complaints, accidents, and any incidents to the proper personnel.
  • Performing all City Morgue Technician duties as needed.
  • Weigh remains, lift remains into storage compartments and .
  • Boxes and loads City Burial as needed.
  • Operating a motor vehicle, driving to and from death scenes to perform case recovery.
  • Adhere to all unit policies and procedures
  • Taking fingerprints of remains before, during, and/or after autopsy.
  • Performing borough case reconciliations.
  • Attends unit and agency meetings as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Special Note

Selected candidates will be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing.

This position has been identified as essential. During emergency events, essential positions may require 24-hour availability.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in mortuary and/or autopsy work.
For Assignment to Level II

In addition to meeting the 'Qualification Requirements' described above, to be assigned to Assignment Level II candidates must have one additional year of the experience described above, for a total of two years of experience.

For Assignment to Assignment Level III

In addition to meeting the 'Qualification Requirements' described above, to be assigned to Assignment Level III candidates must have three additional years of experience as described above, for a total of four years of experience; two years of the experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Preferred Skills

A motor vehicle driver’s license in the state of New York is required.
