Job summary

You’ll maintain high quality casework and collaborate with forensic staff in a dynamic team environment. The role requires four years of lab experience in firearms/toolmark analysis, a scientific degree (bachelor’s or master’s, with substitutions allowed), and the ability to obtain a DoD secret

Qualifications

• Four years of laboratory experience performing firearms and toolmark analysis.
• Bachelor's degree in a scientific field; extensive related work may substitute.
• Master's degree may substitute for one year of experience.
• Safe firearm handling and weapon maintenance practices.
• Techniques to visualize and compare firearms, bullets and cartridge cases.
• Use of microscopes and measuring devices for comparisons.
• Serial number restoration experience.
• Technical and administrative case file reviews.
• Must have 20/20 vision (correctable), and the ability to obtain DoD clearance.
• US citizenship required to obtain a US Top Secret clearance.
• Must obtain a US passport and pass medical assessment.

Responsibilities

• Examine evidence and forensic materials and render items safe.
• Identify make/model, origin, manufacturer, and serial numbers.
• Evaluate tool marks using magnification, etching, x-ray, and photography.
• Capture images to support analysis and documentation.
• Submit to national databases and support exploitation missions.
• Perform forensic examination of tool marks on weapons/IED evidence.
• Prepare detailed notes and formal reports.
• Conduct technical reviews of colleagues' casework and ensure QA.
