Diehl Group Architects is a forensic architecture firm that specializes in building envelope and waterproofing failure investigations related to construction defect and pre-litigation matters. The firm examines the cause, extent, and performance of building envelope assemblies, including balconies, podium decks, and waterproofing systems in multi-family, mixed-use, and commercial projects. Diehl Group Architects is frequently retained for early case evaluation, forensic investigations, and expert reports addressing water intrusion, moisture-related damage, and alleged construction defects in both plaintiff and defense matters, primarily in California state court. Typical projects involve newer construction experiencing early-life envelope or waterproofing failures, with services grounded in building science, applicable codes, and industry standards. Based in Southern California, the firm provides forensic services across the Southwest and throughout the United States.

Role Description

The Forensic Architect role is a full-time, on-site position located in San Diego, CA. The individual in this role will investigate building envelope and waterproofing performance, conduct site inspections, document physical conditions, and analyze potential construction defects. Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing architectural and construction documents, performing diagnostic assessments, coordinating with consultants, and preparing technical reports that support litigation, mediation, and settlement discussions. The Forensic Architect will collaborate with project teams, attorneys, and other experts, contribute to code and industry standard evaluations, and may assist with deposition and trial preparation. This role involves both field work and office-based analysis, requiring careful documentation, clear communication, and consistent attention to detail.

Qualifications
  • Strong technical background in building envelope design, waterproofing systems, and construction detailing, with the ability to assess performance and failures.
  • Experience performing site investigations, condition assessments, and construction defect documentation, including field measurements, photography, and note-taking.
  • Ability to interpret architectural and structural drawings, specifications, codes, and industry standards, and apply building science principles to forensic analysis.
  • Proficient in written communication for preparing clear, well-organized technical reports, summaries, and expert-level documentation.
  • Effective collaboration skills for working with internal team members, clients, attorneys, and other experts in a professional, objective manner.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Architecture or a closely related field; professional licensure as an Architect (or progression toward licensure) preferred.
  • Prior experience in forensic architecture, building envelope consulting, or construction administration is highly beneficial.
  • Comfort with frequent on-site work, including travel to project locations, and the ability to perform field tasks safely and efficiently.
