Job summary

Sylvania is hiring for a school cafeteria position. The role involves food preparation, serving meals to students and staff, and maintaining a clean kitchen area. You will assist with cashier duties, data entry for meal eligibility, and stock control.

Responsibilities

  • Food preparation, heating foods, preparing serving lines, and cafeteria service for breakfast and/or lunch.
  • Daily cleaning and sanitation of kitchen work areas; assist with cafeteria tables when needed.
  • Wash dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and trays; store properly.
  • Unload and stock storage using FIFO method.
  • Assist with cashier duties and operate cash register; reconcile cash drawers.
  • Record meals served by eligibility at point of sale and manage related data.
  • Ensure breakfast/lunch components meet USDA meal pattern requirements.

Job description

HOURS: 8 hrs/day (approximately 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.)

POSITION BEGINS: immediately, and follows school year calendar

REPORTS TO: Director of Food Service

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Food preparation, heating foods, preparing serving lines, and cafeteria for service of breakfast and/or lunch to students and staff.
  • Daily cleaning and sanitation of work areas in the kitchen, and occasionally cafeteria tables, chairs, etc.; this will include but not limited to sweeping, mopping, wiping areas in the absence of a custodian.
  • Wash dishes, pots, pans, utensils, trays, etc. and store in proper designated spaces.
  • Unloads and stocks storage areas using F.I.F.O. method.
  • Performs cashier duties, runs a cash register, reconciles cash drawers, and ensures money accurately reflects items sold.
  • Accurately count, record, and claim the number of meals served to students by eligibility (paid, reduced, free) through managing data at the point of sale.
  • Ensure meal components and items offered for breakfast or lunch follow the USDA meal pattern requirements.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • No experience required, but some previous food service work is desirable; high school diploma or equivalent; or any combination of training and experience likely to provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
  • Good physical condition and fitness.
  • Good knowledge of cleaning materials and sanitation practices according to SOP (Standard Operation Procedures).
  • Willingness to become Serve Safe certified.
  • Ability to become CPR/first aid certified.
  • Knowledge of USDA guidelines set forth and abide by them.
  • Ability to work effectively without close supervision.
  • Ability to keep records as receiving and production records, inventory sheets.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding student records including allergies and income eligibility.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use proper communications with coworkers and supervisor.
  • Must be well organized and willing to help others.
  • Ability to maintain effective professional relationships with staff, students, parents, and the general public.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Flexibility to make necessary changes in your work routine as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

EQUIPMENT USED

Kitchen, transporting and cleaning equipment including but not limited to dish machine, mixer, various ovens, steamer, tilt braiser, food processor, meat slicer, kitchen wares, carts, truck lifts, and shop vac.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside, but on occasion will be outside working in various weather conditions. Must be able to work in extreme temperatures, confined spaces, work with chemicals and smells commonly associated with cooking, cleaning, and school in general. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be noisy, depending upon the task at hand.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, lift objects, twist at neck and waist, bend, push, stoop, reach, and kneel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to lift and/or carry up to 40 pounds and lift/push lunch tables.

MENTAL/MOTOR DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee often performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). Guidance and reinforcement are usually unavailable. The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee may be involved in interactions which require oral and written communications.
