$42,641.00/yr - $52,413.00/yr

Duties Description

The incumbent will report to the Office of Fire Prevention and Control's Academy of Fire Science.

Duties Will Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Clean, prepare, cook, and serve any type of food including full course meals, fruit, vegetables, homemade soups, salads, and deserts, while maintaining work area in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Ensure that breakfast, lunch, and dinner is served in a timely, professional, and accommodating manner in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Perform and supervise clean-up of the kitchen and dining room facilities and maintain sanitary conditions in accordance with NYS Health Department standards.
  • Having frequent oral communication with kitchen staff and others to exchange information relating to food service activities.
  • Provide in-service training, supervision, direction, correction, and evaluation of the work of subordinates responsible for food preparation, food portion control, food storage, appropriate dish washing and other cleaning actions, ensuring proper procedures and techniques are followed.
  • Supervise other subordinate cleaning or maintenance staff as necessary.
  • Requisition food and needed food and supplies in compliance with established OGS procurement guidelines and oversee proper storage and safekeeping and act as a liaison with vendors.
  • Food Service Worker 2 may supervise and/or perform and perform any or all the tasks outlined in the classification standard for Food Service Worker 1.
  • Various duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).***

To Be Considered For Appointment Through NY HELPS, Or 55 B/c, Candidates Must Meet The Open-competitive Minimum Qualifications For This Position. The Qualifications Are:

Two years of qualifying experience in commercial or institutional food preparation or food service. Examples of qualifying experience: employment in a hospital, nursing home, or school cafeteria; residential dining hall; restaurant; or diner. Experience must have included responsibility for food preparation, food service, and ordering of food and non-food supplies.

Substitution For The Qualifying Experience:

Appropriate* formal culinary arts or food service training which resulted in a certificate or degree may be credited towards the above experience as follows: 1. A six-month certificate training program* - up to six months of the required experience; or 2. A one-year certificate training program* - up to one year of the required experience; or 3. An associate degree* or higher in culinary arts or food service from a regionally accredited college or university – up to two years of the required experience.

  • Appropriate formal food service training programs are accredited by one of the following: American Culinary Federation Education Founding Accrediting Commission (ACFEFAC) or non-degree programs recognized by the American Culinary Federation Founding Educational Assurance program or programs accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT).

Transfer:

Applicants may also be appointed to this position if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title OR are a current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service as a Food Service Worker 2 and eligible for reassignment OR are a current New York State employee and are eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

Promotional:

One year of permanent service as a Food Service Worker 1.

Additional Comments

  • This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

NOTE: This position will be scheduled for 37.5 hours each week between the hours of 6:00AM to 7:00PM and including evening, weekend, and non-continuous hours.

NOTE: Applicants must have, or be willing to obtain a ServSafe food and safety training and certification

NOTE: Support of operations during times of emergency and disaster from State Emergency Operations Center (EOC), state field offices and/or local deployments may be required, which would result in a change and/or increase in working hours, locations and/or duties.
