Job summary

Hampton Roads Community Action Program (HRCAP) in Newport News, VA is seeking a Kitchen Assistant to support Head Start meal services. You will transport and heat food, follow state guidelines, and assist the cook with meal prep while maintaining a clean, sanitary kitchen.

Requires 2 years in food service, High School or GED, and a VA Driver's License; certification within 90 days is expected. Benefits include paid time off, health coverage, and a retirement plan.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Transport foods to classrooms in Head Start centers to provide meals.
• Heat up food in microwave when necessary.
• Follow USDA guidelines and Virginia Health Regulations.
• Interact with staff, students and families in a friendly manner.
• Assist cook with meal prep: slicing, panning, bagging, labeling, packaging.
• Washes dishes, silverware, and pots daily per health regulations.
• Complete weekly inventory and maintain FIFO supplies.
• Store food and supplies per kitchen policy and USDA/VA rules.
• Dispose of expired items and log waste.
• Keep kitchen and equipment clean and sanitary.
• Communicate menu/inventory issues with Nutrition Manager; adjust as needed.
• Attend staff meetings and perform other duties as assigned.

• Ensure all expiredfood items are disposed of and logged in a waste log.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS :

Requires knowledgeand 2 years of experience in their area of Food Service.

Must have HighSchool education or GED.
