Job summary

State of Maryland, Baltimore, seeks a Food Service Manager I to oversee daily food production, procurement, and service for youth at the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center. You will help direct the operation, ensure safe, nutritious meals, and maintain compliance with HACCP and SOPs.

You will supervise kitchen supervisors, assist with FMIS-based procurement, monitor satellite operations, evaluate staff, and support youth well-being through healthy meals.

Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of experience supervising workers and activities in an institutional, commercial, or industrial food service operation.
  • Notes: a Bachelor's degree plus 1 year of supervisory experience may substitute the required experience.
  • For military service, experience as a Food Services Officer or Culinary Specialist can substitute on a year-for-year basis.

Main Purpose of Job

We are seeking passionate individuals for the role of Food Service Manager I, so come join our team and make a meaningful impact on youth and the community at DJS! As the Food Service Manager I, you will assist with directing the food service operation and supporting the delivery of safe, nutritious, and appetizing meals that promote the health and well-being of youth. You will contribute to daily food production and service, food and supply procurement, personnel matters, and compliance with applicable local, State, and Federal regulations.



  • Supporting Food Service Operations – Assisting with organizing and directing daily food production and food service activities and supervising kitchen food service supervisors

  • Supporting Procurement – Assisting with the procurement of food and food-related supplies using the Financial Management Information System (FMIS)

  • Promoting Food Safety and Compliance – Monitoring kitchen operations for compliance with HACCP and CNP-based Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Monitoring Satellite Operations – Performing weekly site visits and inspecting satellite food service operations for compliance with HACCP-based SOPs

  • Supporting Employee Performance – Assisting with employee performance evaluations and personnel issues

  • Supporting Youth Well-Being – Contributing to safe, nutritious, and appetizing meals that promote the health and well-being of youth


Selected candidate should note that the work location may change, including assignment to another DJS location, based on operational needs, staffing requirements, or organizational priorities.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Five (5) years of experience supervising workers and activities in an institutional, commercial, or industrial food service operation.


Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of experience supervising workers and activities in an institutional, commercial, or industrial food service operation for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Food Services Officers or Culinary Specialist classifications or Food Services Manager and Services Officer specialty codes in the Food Service Management field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.


DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Experience working with a financial management information system, such as FMIS or a comparable system, and/or relevant financial management processes

  • Experience working with Federal Child Nutrition Programs (CNP), including applicable program requirements, documentation, and compliance processes

  • Experience implementing and maintaining Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) procedures in an institutional, commercial, or other food-service operation

  • Experience managing food service operations in a correctional, juvenile justice, residential, healthcare, educational, or other institutional setting
