Position Summary:

The Food Service Assistant (FSA) assists the Food & Nutrition Services Supervisor (FNSS) to ensure breakfast, lunch, and snack services at St. Joseph Academy (SJA) meet national food handling standards, align with SJA's mission and values, and comply with policies and regulations. The FSA performs food preparation, sanitation, equipment operation, facility cleaning, and troubleshooting. The role includes filling in for other Food Service staff during absences.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Experience in food service/kitchen preferred
  • Safe Serve Certification required within 6 months
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus
  • Ability to analyze issues, identify options, and implement solutions
  • Interest in working with children
  • Ability to work cooperatively with team members and others
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Good hand-eye coordination
  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
  • Detail-oriented with ability to multitask, prioritize, work under pressure, and meet deadlines
Job Description
Essential Job Functions/Duties
  • Provide excellent service to children
  • Ensure children's privacy and confidentiality at all times
  • Model child-centered behaviors for staff
  • Use communication methods to address issues and conflicts proactively
  • Maintain safety and sanitation standards, cleaning work areas after each assignment
  • Operate and secure equipment and supplies safely to protect health and safety
  • Set up cafeteria for lunch service (e.g., washing tables, mopping floors, arranging tables)
  • Manage kitchen stock: dating, rotating, organizing, and cleaning
  • Label, date, and restock food items and supplies clearly, ensuring proper storage
  • Perform deep cleaning of kitchen and related areas as needed
  • Cross-train to prepare food, serve, handle food temperatures, replenish service lines, and manage allergy lists and substitutions, ensuring compliance with standards
  • Follow all food handling, storage, and service policies and procedures
  • Contribute to departmental productivity and cost-effectiveness
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulatory standards
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
