Position Purpose
The School Nutrition Assistant prepares and serves breakfast, lunch, and other food to school children and adults in a courteous, customer service-oriented manner. The SNA is responsible for organizing and setting up equipment and workstations as directed by the SNS Manager. Duties are performed in compliance with USDA, health, food service, and other relevant regulations and laws. The School Nutrition Aide must demonstrate proper cafeteria equipment operation skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- Basic ability to read, speak, and understand English, and to count currency; ability to make change at the register
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of materials and methods used in preparing and serving foods on a large scale
- Knowledge of the use and care of food preparation equipment
- Skill in using kitchen utensils and equipment
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, students, and colleagues
- Ability to maintain emotional control and confidentiality, especially regarding students qualifying for Free and Reduced Lunch
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and address customers courteously
Education, Training, and Experience
- Ability to read and follow written food menus and work schedules
Certification and License Requirements
- Valid food handler's certification or card as required by state and USDA
- Participation in ongoing food service education as required by USDA
- Valid driver's license issued by the NC DMV
Preferred Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- Experience working in a school cafeteria within the last five years
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Practice personal hygiene and sanitation procedures
- Monitor and operate equipment at the start of each day
- Prepare and serve food according to instructions
- Handle cashiering duties, including sales and serving a la carte items
- Maintain clean and stocked serving areas
- Monitor food and equipment temperatures
- Exhibit courtesy and professionalism to staff, students, and customers
- Perform dishwashing and cleaning duties
- Set up and break down serving areas
- Manage inventory, including receiving, stocking, and rotating stock
- Participate in training and promote sanitation practices
- Maintain a safe and tidy work environment
- Participate in marketing and community events
- Follow designated work schedules and perform additional duties as assigned
