Introduction
The Department of Health Services (DHS), Central Wisconsin Center (CWC) is recruiting multiple full-time Food Service Assistant 2 positions. Shifts for these positions at CWC are from 6:00 am - 2:30 pm or 11:00 am - 7:30 pm and every other weekend.
CWC provides short-term and long-term residential services to assist people living with intellectual disabilities in acquiring the personal skills needed to reach their highest potential. CWC is located at 317 Knutson Drive on the North side of Madison. CWC also has a 24/7 fitness center, free parking, and is on the Madison Metro bus route.

Position Summary
Responsibilities
As a Food Service Assistant, you will provide portion prepared food items from bulk containers to individual trays, snack bags and bag lunches based on diet. You will also be responsible for:
- Cleaning equipment and utensils
- Assisting with basic food preparation and transportation of food from the Central Kitchen to resident living units
- Cleaning food production equipment
- Storing food supplies
- Performing all custodial, sanitation and related tasks in the Food Service Department
Salary Information
The starting pay is $17.12 per hour, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required.
A $2,000 sign-on bonus applies to those with no prior state service in the last five years; who stay with CWC until completing probation. Bonus will be split, $1,000 upon hire and $1,000 after completing probation.
Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. These positions are classified as a Food Service Assistant 2 and are in pay schedule and range 03/09.
Job Details
- All applicants who may be appointed to this position will be required to allow DHS to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.
- All appointees will be required to receive a TB test, which will be administered by CWC or medical personnel approved by the facility prior to their start date.
- These positions have physical requirements which may include but are not limited to lifting up to 30 lbs., pushing 100 lb. food carts, climbing ladders, bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling, stooping, standing, sitting and working on feet for extended periods of time. Applicants may be required to pass a physical evaluation to assess these requirements.
- DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, selected candidates will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.
Qualifications
Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:
- Ability to work scheduled hours as needed, which may include weekends, holidays, early morning or early evenings, and overtime as needed.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and accept work assignment changes as needed.
- Experience with basic sanitation, hand washing and safety standards in a food service environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.
Well-qualified Candidates Will Also Have The Following
- Previous food service or production experience.
