Job description

Position Title: Food Service Assistant #1

Location: Three Fires Elementary School

Reports To: Kitchen Manager, Food Service Director and/or Principal/Assistant Principal

Status: Ten (10) month position

Schedule: 3.75 hrs/day; 10:15 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

SUMMARY:

The Food Service Assistant provides support in our student nutrition program by working in our school cafeterias, preparing and serving food, cleaning and sanitizing all items and areas within the department, handling food purchase transactions, all while providing excellent customer service to staff and students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Must move into Manager’s position when needed, including breakfast hours starting at 7:30 a.m.
  2. Turn on all hot and cold serving units on both lines and add water to hot wells.
  3. Help prepare hot food.
  4. Prepare fruit and vegetables for both salad bars and record starting amounts on daily production record.
  5. Fill milk in online coolers.
  6. Set up water/ala carte items.
  7. Count cash drawer starting monies.
  8. Run cash register during lunch and sell ala carte.
  9. Deposit lunch money into meal accounts.
  10. Maintain confidentiality regarding students' accounts.
  11. Keep register and surrounding area clean and free of dust.
  12. Between lunches, refill salad bar, clean up & sanitize serving lines/condiment table, spot sweep, check & pull forward milk in both coolers.
  13. Perform cash out procedure at 1:10 p.m.
  14. Clear out salad bars, record end amounts on daily production record and properly pack, date & store leftover produce.
  15. Clean serving lines and salad bars.
  16. Clean out hot wells using vinegar to descale.
  17. Sweep and mop serving areas.
  18. If needed, help pull trash, wash dishes or stock paper goods.
  19. Any other duties assigned by the Manager or Food Service Director.
  20. Clean/sanitize line and milk coolers once a week or more as needed.
  21. Wednesday mornings help put away deliveries.
  22. Help clean ovens on the days they are not used.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma (or equivalent); must pass a basic math skills test.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions;
  • Ability to work with the general public and students.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, administration, and the school community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to coordinate hands, eyes, feet, and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements such as cooking, washing dishes, and operating a computer keyboard, cash register, and telephone. The employee is required to be on his/her feet walking around the cafeteria and food service department building for several hours at a time. The employee is required to exert physical effort in work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, walking, standing, reaching with hands and arms, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds from floor to waist height. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY:

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud. The work environment is normally indoors with controlled climate conditions. Occasionally the employee may be required to be outdoors for a short period of time, and therefore subject to varying weather conditions, for purposes of accomplishing the essential functions of this job. This position requires the employee to work in different building cafeteria and food service departments as needed. The ability to travel via employee’s automobile between buildings is required.
