Job description

Veteran Food Service Assistant

The Food Service Assistant for U.S.VETS is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day cleanliness and maintenance of the server line. This position reports directly to the Food Service Coordinator.

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain sanitation, health, and safety standards in work areas.
  • Prepare simple food items, such as sandwiches, toast, and coffee, using proper food handling techniques.
  • Assist with the preparation of vegetables, fresh fruits, and other foods.
  • Re-heat prepared food received from vendors and serve at proper temperatures as regulated by the State Health Department.
  • Serve food according to the funder’s and clients' nutritional requirements.
  • Operate the food service line.
  • Set up for serving and serve a wide variety of meals.
  • Participate in cleaning and storing dishes, utensils, food service equipment, and supplies.
  • Clean work areas and dispose of refuse.
  • Assist with packaging and loading food for transport to U.S.VETS functions.
  • Sweep floors, wipe tables and counters, fill supplies for the next day, and perform general clean-up tasks.
  • Perform baking duties as necessary.
  • Supervise veteran helpers on workstations or community service projects.
  • Perform duties safely and responsibly.
  • Pick up donations as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Three to six months of experience in food handling preferred.
  • Experience working with homeless veterans preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of residents, staff, and community members.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess a valid State Food Handler Health Card.
  • Knowledge of food handling procedures and protocols.
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet company insurance requirements, including completing a driver training course.
