Job summary

Benton Community School District is seeking a part-time Food Service Worker for the Middle School/High School building to support meals for students. The position starts at $19.00 per hour and runs for 180 student days, with prep and training requirements.

Responsibilities include dishwashing, warewashing, serving and basic food preparation, with emphasis on safety, sanitation and cost awareness. Prior school kitchen experience is preferred but not required.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to read and calculate standardized recipes and have experience and/or knowledge in quantity food preparation.
  • Regular attendance.

Job Description

Middle School/High School Food Service Worker

School Year

2026-2027

Starting Rate of Pay

$19.00 /hour

Days

180 Student days with additional days for kitchen set-up prior to first student day and required continuing education.

The employee is required to report to work at normal time during late starts, but will not work on unexpected school closure days (snow days). These hours are subject to change with the needs of the kitchen. Hours will be determined by the Director and/or the Kitchen Manager.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties include dishwashing, warewashing, sanitizing tables, trash disposal, and serving. It may include Food prep, Cooking, Baking, and other clean-up duties. This position also includes other duties as assigned. The employee will prepare or assist in the preparation, cooking, and serving of a variety of nutritious and attractive foods to students in a safe and cost effective manner that supports the goals of the District.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Qualifications
  • Certified on an employees medical examination form to be fully qualified in health.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to read and calculate standardized recipes and have experience and/or knowledge in quantity food preparation.
  • Regular attendance.
Performance Responsibilities/Essential Functions
  • Follow oral or written directions.
  • Effectively and efficient operation of cash register.
  • Assist with serving and clean up of all equipment such as stoves, refrigerators, pots, pans, and satellite equipment.
  • Maintain high standards of sanitation and safety.
  • Help in any areas when needed. May use all equipment.
  • Assist manager in proper handling, storage, and rotation of foods.
  • Notify manager when supplies are needed or when equipment needs maintenance or repair.
  • Maintain records as needed in an organized manner.
  • Perform all other related food service duties as directed.
  • Required to handle chemicals in commercial strength detergents and cleaning solutions.

  • Must be able to work in a standing and/or walking position for long periods of time under conditions of extreme temperatures.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 53 pounds efficiently on a regular basis.
  • Must have manual dexterity to operate and handle equipment related to all aspects of general food preparation in a way that ensures safety while performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, talk or hear, taste or smell, walk and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate tools or controls.

  • Commercial kitchen setting including (hard) surface floors and extreme temperatures ranging from 50 degrees to 98 degrees Fahrenheit. The noise level in the work environment is quiet/moderately loud/loud.
  • Employee must wear uniform and appropriate hair restraints (approved by Food Service Director and/or state/county authority) at all times in food preparation and dining areas.
  • Must have ability to tolerate chemicals in commercial strength detergents and cleaning solutions.

Days of service as specified in contract language. Salary established by the Board.
