Job summary

The New York Times Cooking is seeking a video journalist to develop documentary and storytelling-focused videos for on- and off-platform audiences. You will pitch, report, and produce engaging videos centered on food and cooking, with a focus on narrative storytelling in fast-paced environments.

Candidates should have hands-on digital video experience, strong production skills, and a passion for content that informs and delights.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of documentary experience: producing, directing, shooting and editing for online audiences (10–30 minute formats).
  • Strong understanding of video platform analytics, especially YouTube.
  • Proficient editing using Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Experience creating scripts and outlines for video editors.
  • Strategic, tests and iterates to find what resonates with audiences.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and support a small team.
  • Well-versed in social and digital food media with knowledge of competitors.
  • Collaborative team player with a positive attitude.
  • Passion for food and The New York Times mission.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, shoot and edit multi-camera videos in the field with personality-driven storytelling through the lens of food and cooking.
  • Produce and lead episodes of new and established NYT Cooking series and formats.
  • Collaborate with team members and freelancers to create videos at a level consistent with The Times’s journalistic standards.
  • Build out crews and coordinate logistics between in-house production and freelancers.
  • Collaborate during the editing process by providing helpful and effective notes on videos.
  • Approach producing, editing and publishing video material for off-platform and social-focused projects with flexibility.
  • Publish videos in NYT Cooking’s content management systems and on Youtube.
