Job summary

The City of Renton is seeking an engineering professional to serve as a FOG Inspector within the Wastewater Utility Engineering Division. This role supports the FOG Source Control Program through field inspections of commercial facilities, grease interceptor review, and education on proper grease handling.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college-level coursework in civil engineering and/or drafting.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Two years of college-level coursework in civil engineering and/or drafting and two years of civil engineering experience, or four years of relevant education and experience.
  • Two years of college-level coursework in civil engineering and/or drafting and four years of increasingly responsible civil engineering experience, or six years of relevant education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inspections and evaluate sites for compliance with City codes and requirements.
  • Review engineering plans, permits, construction documents, and cost estimates.
  • Provide technical guidance to the public, contractors, developers, and City staff.
  • Manage engineering projects and coordinate with contractors, consultants, and outside agencies.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering records, reports, maps, and project documentation.
  • Research issues and recommend solutions to engineering and compliance concerns.
  • Support utility, transportation, surface water, and capital improvement projects as assigned.
  • Participate in meetings, project coordination, and community communication.

Job description

The City of Renton is seeking a skilled engineering professional to serve as a FOG Inspector within the Wastewater Utility Engineering Division. This position supports the City’s Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Source Control Program through field inspections of commercial food facilities, technical review of grease interceptors, education on proper grease handling and pretreatment, and maintaining compliance information in GIS and tracking systems.

The ideal candidate combines technical knowledge, sound judgment, and strong communication skills to work effectively with businesses, contractors, City staff, and the community while helping protect Renton’s wastewater infrastructure.

  • Engineering Specialist 1: $76,092–$92,724 annually
  • Engineering Specialist 2: $88,188–$107,448 annually
  • Engineering Specialist 3: $97,368–$118,692 annually

Salary placement is based on education, experience, and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on classification, responsibilities may include:
