Job summary

Southeast Ventura County YMCA is looking for passionate educators to join the Find My Genius program in Simi Valley, California. The role entails implementing collaborative teaching strategies and supporting scholars in their academic and social development.

Ideal candidates will have a minimum of one year of experience working with children, a love for education, and the ability to develop engaging lessons. This position requires CPR and First Aid certifications and a commitment to the Y's mission.

Essential Functions
  • Implement collaborative teaching strategies with academic and/or enrichment teachers to a cluster of scholars.
  • Support the development and delivery of relevant, engaging, and rigorous lessons.
  • Ensure the academic and social development of scholars throughout the course of the program.
  • Serve as a role model for an assigned group of scholars.
  • Work with teachers to identify scholar needs and develop instructional plans and practices to best support scholars.
  • Monitor scholars’ educational and social progress and make necessary recommendations for adjustments.
  • Support classroom and behavior management consistently to develop a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Maintain attendance and support classroom procedures/functions.
  • Supervise scholars during classroom transitions as well as during lunch, snack, recess, etc.
  • Assist in field trips and special events.
Qualifications
  • Academic skills – proficiency in elementary math and literacy.
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with children.
  • Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse populations.
  • Desire to work with elementary scholars and their families in under‑resourced communities.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and technological (computer/internet) skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and influence scholars, staff, community members, and families.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Committed to the goals of the program and approach.
  • Love and respect for children.
  • Evidence of efficacy and willingness to be a team player.
  • Belief and commitment to the Y’s mission and values.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications obtained through either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association Heartsaver. Class must be either blended or in‑person. Online certifications do not meet this requirement. Certifications must be maintained and current for the entire camp season.
  • Criminal record clearance.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
  • May require the ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods, wade in water to supervise children, walk continuously at least one half‑mile, and spend a full workday outdoors in any weather condition.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
