Summary

The EHS Specialist is a critical, hands‑on safety partner based at the Fairbanks Morse Defense Service Center in Chesapeake, Virginia, or Houston, Texas.

This is not a behind‑the‑desk role. The successful candidate will maintain an active presence in service environments and local shipyards, working directly with technicians and leaders to identify risks, reinforce safe practices, and strengthen FMA's safety‑first culture.

Reporting to the EHS Director, this role supports employee onboarding and mentorship, safety training, audits, OSHA compliance, incident follow‑up, Safety Champion activities, emergency drills, and continuous program improvement. The ideal candidate is approachable, proactive, mechanically inclined, and confident working with employees at every level. Approximately 50% travel and schedule flexibility are required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead by example to foster an approachable, professional, and team‑based safety mindset at all FMA locations.
  • Conduct, facilitate, and document safety‑related training for new hires and current technicians to ensure a safe and fully trained workforce.
  • Manage the FMA Safety Training program to ensure employees are current on all annual compliance training.
  • Assist the EHS Manager in organizing and rolling out yearly safety stand‑downs at all FMA locations.
  • Verify that technicians have completed the appropriate qualifications for their assigned positions.
  • Maintain all FMA training records accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Support the Safety Champion program by conducting bi‑weekly meetings and check‑ins.
  • Perform site visits and safety audits at FMA facilities and local shipyards where technicians are stationed.
  • Report all FMA work‑related incidents to Workers' Compensation.
  • Manage safety opportunities with real‑time follow‑up and tracking of technician submittals.
  • Audit the safety program annually as required by OSHA, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Coordinate yearly OSHA drills, including fire and tornado drills, and support Safety Champions in documenting these drills at all FMA facilities.
  • Review safety trends and goals with the EHS Director on a quarterly basis.
  • Support the service DLA program through documentation, training, and related activities.
  • Maintain an active presence primarily in the service environment, with administrative duties as required.
  • Use Microsoft Office to create Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and written procedures in Word.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the department manager.
  • Travel approximately 50% of the time.

Education
  • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) credential required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) or an equivalent field preferred.
Experience

  • Experience working in a fast‑paced environment.
Knowledge
  • Basic math skills and the ability to apply OSHA regulations effectively.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and additional equipment as required.

  • Comfortable working around moving equipment and machinery.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and stairs.Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, forward reaching, and twisting.
  • Occasional squatting, crouching, and above‑shoulder reaching.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
