PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring Salary : $23.56 - $29.45 / hourly

The Flow Control Technician-I performs dispatch duties and assists in the operation and monitoring of Aurora's Water system. Answers calls from citizens, dispatch Aurora's on-call personnel, and perform operational duties such as system monitoring, operation, and coordination of on-call response. System monitoring includes water treatment, transmission and distribution, source water, and reuse treatment and pumping.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receives and processes emergency, non-emergency, and administrative phone calls from citizens, and Aurora Water divisions, prioritizing calls for service.
  • Performs after-hours emergency dispatch for Aurora Water and maintains field personnel status.
  • Monitors SCADA, a multi-line phone system, and a variety of radio channels simultaneously.
  • With close supervision, monitors SCADA, maintenance management programs, and other computer programs / software to monitor security, operations, and maintenance of Aurora Water systems which includes raw water supply, water treatment, water transmission and distribution, wastewater treatment and collection, wastewater reuse, and storm drain
  • Coordinates with field personnel in emergency situations
  • Transfers calls to various sections in the City of Aurora during normal working hours
  • Assist in preparation of required reports and daily logs
  • Maintains knowledge of departmental policies and procedures
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education :

  • High School Diploma or GED

Experience :

  • At least 6 months experience related to the operation and maintenance of water distribution, or wastewater collection systems, or 6 months vocational training in an accredited water training program

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Basic water theory and principles (hydraulics, gradients, etc.), distribution system principles, operations, control processes and maintenance requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of a dispatch center.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers including word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Ability to handle multiple complex situations.
  • Experience related to the operation and maintenance of a water distribution system.

Knowledge :

  • Basic knowledge of the operations of water utility systems
  • Basic knowledge of SCADA control
  • Basic knowledge of consumption forecasting principles
  • Basic knowledge of water and wastewater treatment plant concepts
  • Basic water theory and principles (hydraulics, gradients, etc.), distribution system principles, operations, control processes and maintenance requirements.
  • Basic Knowledge of personal computers including spreadsheet, word processing and other job-related software applications.
  • Basic knowledge of a dispatch center operation.

Skills :

  • Skill in the use of personal computers including word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Skill in checking information for accuracy and completeness and correcting errors.

Abilities :

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizen
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Operate two-way radios and a multi-line phone system.
  • Handle multiple complex situations, solve system problems, & coordinate resources.
  • Prepare and create logs & reports.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to read blueprints and maps
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex data concerning the flow of water into and throughout the water system
  • Work shifts and nights; and work overtime, standby, and / or callback duty

Licenses and Certifications Required :

  • Certificate Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands :

  • Continuous sedentary work with infrequent light work that involves moving no more than 20 pounds at a time
  • Clear vision to read and interpret reports, design specifications, and other written documents.
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
  • Hand / eye coordination for operation of computer, phones, and radios.
  • Foot / eye for operation of motor vehicle.
  • Hearing and listening for instructions and warning signals.
  • Continuous work in a clean comfortable environment with exposure to a water treatment facility.
  • Works shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Equipment Used :

  • Continuous operation of communication equipment & computer and infrequent operations of motor vehicles
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
