Summary/Objectives
The Universal Banker serves as a full-service, single point of contact in the branch for SouthState customers’ financial needs. The position operates in the dual capacity of a Teller and FSR, providing exceptional customer service in both transactional and account management. The Universal Banker aims to attract, expand, and retain customer relationships and is responsible for contributing to the bank’s financial growth.
Essential Functions

- Serves customers quickly, accurately, efficiently, and confidentially according to South State Bank Service Standards.
- Knows and understands the products and services offered by the bank, including features, benefits, rules, regulations, and pricing.
- Identifies customer needs through attentive listening and makes referrals to expand relationships.
- Presents a neat and professional personal appearance, in line with bank policy.
- Ensures compliance with all banking regulations, including Regulation CC and Bank Secrecy Act.
- Develops a strong understanding of customer-facing technology and assists customers with self-service options.
Teller Duties
- Processes transactions for savings, checking, and loan accounts.
- Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
- May assist in training new tellers.
- Provides access to safe deposit boxes.
- Cashes checks and processes withdrawals within limits.
- Sells certified checks.
- Balances transactions daily.
- May service/balance ATM and utilize branch capture systems.
- Follows policies and procedures to minimize errors and ensure security.
FSR Duties
- Opens new deposit accounts and handles related services.
- Explains policies and procedures clearly to customers.
- Resolves customer problems courteously and refers complex issues to appropriate channels.
- Shows appreciation for customer business and shares contact information.
- Follows security and audit procedures.
- Ensures accurate documentation of customer development efforts.
Floating Universal Banker Functions
- One year of teller or cash handling experience and six months of customer relationship or sales experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in Teller II and basic FSR functions.
- May include vault responsibilities or back-up vault duties.
- Float to different branches as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Education, and Certification
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Cash handling, sales, and customer service experience; banking experience preferred.
- Good interpersonal and computer skills; fluency in English.
Training Requirements
- New Team Member Orientation, Teller Foundations, Banker Foundations, Regulatory Compliance Training, Policy Acknowledgment.
- Additional training as needed based on experience.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand or sit for long periods, and interpret information from screens and documents.
Work Environment
Typically in an open lobby area within a climate-controlled facility.
Travel
Travel required to various branches within the region.
