Under the supervision of the Lab Blood Draw Station Supervisor within Laboratory Medicine, performs phlebotomy for patients at draw station locations. Also handles various office duties to support station operations. Interacts positively with patients and clients.
Responsibilities
- Ensure all required information is obtained from referring physicians and providers and provided to third-party payers for reimbursement.
- Review insurance information with patients and record it accurately in the EMR.
- Create MR numbers for new patients and complete registration using hospital standards.
- Update patient records in YNHH HIS and create necessary components for laboratory services.
- Produce ABNs, provide financial consultation, obtain signatures, and scan forms into HIS.
- Communicate instructions, dates, times, and locations for blood draws clearly to patients.
- Enter comments and notes on orders in EMR to resolve issues.
- Ensure all authorizations are received before specimen collection.
- Inform patients of billing responsibilities and explain hospital policies as needed.
- Coordinate with supervisors regarding lab test authorizations and approvals.
- Adhere to HIPAA, JCAHO, and federal guidelines.
- Verify test orders and answer patient inquiries about collection procedures.
- Gather and transcribe test requisitions accurately.
- Confirm test order details before collection.
- Review requisitions for completeness and contact physicians if needed.
- Coordinate specimen collection timing with stability requirements and transport logistics.
- Maintain documentation and manage test orders, including tracking and recording patient refusals.
- Manage preadmission testing to ensure tests are within proper time limits.
- Add physicians or patients to test orders for result delivery preferences.
- Ensure all tests are completed before scheduled surgeries or procedures.
- Collect samples and perform EKGs safely and efficiently, supporting quality patient care.
- Maintain competency in venipuncture, EKGs, and nasal swabs through annual updates.
- Follow specimen handling guidelines strictly.
- Review policies annually and complete competencies.
- Verify patient identity accurately to ensure safety and test accuracy.
- Label specimens legibly and accurately at the time of draw.
- Attend ongoing education and staff meetings to stay compliant and proficient.
- Collect specimens using proper techniques, understanding the order of draw.
- Perform blood cultures aseptically to prevent contamination.
- Explain collection procedures clearly to patients.
- Follow universal precautions during all collections.
- Disinfect and maintain the collection area to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Recognize and respond to adverse reactions during procedures.
- Process and package specimens correctly for transport.
- Properly centrifuge and store specimens according to protocol.
- Conduct weekly maintenance of equipment like centrifuges.
- Record temperatures of storage units daily and address deviations.
- Troubleshoot issues with samples or equipment and escalate as needed.
- Ensure specimen integrity from collection to courier pickup.
- Coordinate specimen transport and follow-up on uncollected samples.
- Manage inventory and supplies, supporting regulatory inspections and QA.
- Assess compliance and prepare for inspections proactively.
- Participate in regulatory inspections and answer questions accurately.
- Review lab orders and patient information for discrepancies.
- Maintain inventory records, order supplies, and discard expired items weekly.
- Utilize computer systems like Epic effectively for tasks and documentation.
- Maintain high productivity and adapt to process changes.
- Manage downtime procedures efficiently.
- Provide excellent service aligned with professional standards.
- Ensure smooth patient flow and communicate delays effectively.
- Answer calls promptly and courteously.
- Recognize service issues and initiate recovery processes.
- Follow dress code and professional appearance policies.
- Communicate effectively with team members and other departments.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED required; completion of an approved phlebotomy certification course or equivalent experience.
Experience: Minimum six months of current phlebotomy experience or completion of an accredited program and internship. Preferably 2-3 years in customer service with patient interaction.
Licensure: Phlebotomy Certification or equivalent.
Skills: Self-directed, organized, team-oriented, able to educate patients, multitask, communicate effectively, and demonstrate proficiency in phlebotomy and patient registration systems.
