Job summary

Gundersen Health System seeks a fulltime Flight Paramedic to join Gundersen Air, primarily based in Sparta, WI, with bases in Decorah, IA. The role involves autonomous, high-level care during patient transport, working with a Flight Nurse and pilot to deliver critical care in medical evacuations.

You will perform advanced trauma procedures and operate within established protocols, including in-flight navigation and radio communication.

Qualifications

  • EMT-Paramedic with DOT EMT-P course guidelines.
  • Associate degree in health-related field preferred.
  • 3-4 years' experience in the 911 arena as an EMT-Paramedic (ALS provider) required.
  • 1-year Interfacility transport or Critical Care/air transport experience highly desired.
  • Valid Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa driver's license (state-issued).
  • National Registry EMT-Paramedic (NREMT-P) or state equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patient condition and determine care during transfer.
  • Develop plan of care for patient during transport and prioritize procedures.
  • Perform advanced trauma skills and lifesaving procedures inflight.
  • Coordinate with the Flight Nurse and pilot; assist with navigation and comms as needed.
  • Maintain proficiency with medical protocols, equipment, and emergency procedures.

Emplify Health by Gundersen is seeking a fulltime Flight Paramedic to join our Gundersen Air team, comprised of 11 Flights Nurses and 10 Flight Medics. While we have bases located in both Sparta, WI and Decorah, IA you will primarily be working out of Sparta, WI.

What You'll Do:

As a Flight Paramedic, working in conjunction with the Flight Nurse and pilot in sharing patient care duties and operational responsibilities, you will function as an advanced trained paramedic able to provide critical care in the medical transport of critically ill and injured patients. The role requires an autonomous practice and the ability to follow and deliver care using existing medical protocols and critical thinking skills. In collaboration with the Flight Nurse, you will assess patient condition(s) to determine nature and extent of illness or trauma; develop plan of care for the patient during the transfer; establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed; and incorporate knowledge of patient's physical and psychosocial development into planning intervention(s) to deliver quality patient care.
You will demonstrate and utilize advanced trauma skills and lifesaving procedures such as intubation, needle decompression, surgical and needle cricothyrotomy, central and peripheral intravenous access and pericardiocentesis proficiency. You may also assist the pilot as requested inflight, operating and remaining proficient in advanced radio, navigation, NVG equipment, aviation map reading skills, plotting coordinates, as well as GPS operation.

What's Available:

Fulltime, one 24-hour shift and one 12-hour shift per week. Starting pay of $27.62 per hour and up, based on your years of experience as well as generous shift/weekend/holiday differentials. Onsite: Decorah, IA. Position will require the selected candidate to travel and cross-train in La Crosse, WI and Decorah, IA as part of a 3-month orientation period.

What You'll Need:
  • High School Diploma or equivalency + completion of approved EMT-Paramedic course that utilizes the D.O.T. EMT-P course guidelines.
  • Associate degree in a health related field desired.
  • 3-4 years' work experience in the 911 arena as an EMT-Paramedic working as an Advanced Life Support Provider required.
  • 1-year Interfacility transport experience or Critical Care transport experience or air medical transportation is highly desired.
  • Valid Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa driver's license.
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (NREMT-P).
  • Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic - Wisconsin (EMT-P) & Minnesota (EMT-P MN) & Iowa Paramedic License (EMT-P IA).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) & Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Ability to function in an extended shift (24 hours or greater) environment and be able to constructively utilize down-time between responses, transports, and transfers.
After Hire:
  • Incident Command Center (ICS) 100, 200, 700 & 800 certificates required within 12 months of hire.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Basic Life Support for Obstetrics (BLSO) or Advanced Life Support for Obstetrics (ALSO), and Transport Professional Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC) within 18 months of hire.
  • Flight Paramedic Certified (FP-C) within 24 months of hire date.
